Program Overview

PhD Translation Studies (Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling)

Overview

The PhD Translation Studies (Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling) is a postgraduate research course that allows students to investigate their chosen topic in depth and reach a profound understanding. The course is based in the Department of Language and Linguistics at the University of Essex.

Entry Requirements

  • A good Masters degree, or equivalent, in translation and interpreting or a related subject such as Linguistics or Literature.
  • A well-developed research proposal is also essential.
  • Students will normally be required to attend an interview/Skype interview for acceptance, and acceptance is subject to research expertise in the department.

International & EU Entry Requirements

The University of Essex accepts a wide range of qualifications from applicants studying in the EU and other countries.

English Language Requirements

If English is not the first language, students will require IELTS 7.0 overall and 6.5 in all other components.

Structure

A research degree doesn't have a taught structure, giving students the chance to investigate their chosen topic in real depth and reach a profound understanding. The course allows students to develop new high-level skills, enhance their professional development, and build new networks.

Dissertation

The thesis has a maximum length of 80,000 words. Students' training needs will be regularly assessed, and their progress will be formally checked by a supervisory board consisting of their supervisor, an adviser, and a chairperson.

Fees and Funding

  • Home/UK fee: 」5,006 per year
  • International fee: 」19,650 per year
  • Fees will increase for each academic year of study.
  • There may be scholarships, bursaries, or discounts available to help with the cost of the course.

What's Next

After completing the PhD, career prospects for graduates vary depending on the study undertaken. Often, the career destination of PhD students is university lecturing or research. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the areas of linguistics covered, this could be in departments of English, linguistics, education, sociology, or cognitive science.

Related Courses

The University of Essex also offers an MPhil in Translation Studies (Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling). Part-time research study is also available.

Location and Department

The course is located at the Colchester Campus, within the Department of Language and Linguistics. The department has a strong research group culture and runs regular departmental seminars featuring invited external speakers.

Research Areas

Translation and Interpreting is becoming an increasingly important area of expertise as global communication expands. The PhD project might assess some aspect of Translation, Interpreting, and Subtitling, and come up with recommendations that might lead to an improvement of teaching strategy, working strategy, or underpinning technology.
