Members of staff are always happy to discuss possible PhD research programmes with suitably qualified graduates.


PhD supervision is normally offered in areas which align to our research groups:


  • Advanced Reasoning Group
  • Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Group
  • Intelligent Robotics Group
  • Vision, Graphics and Visualisation Group

We also have considerably and widely recognised expertise in Software Engineering and Network Technology. Industrial collaborators include Ford, Jaguar Cars, Unilever, Daimler Benz, Integral Solutions Ltd., Costain and Glaxo.


We have a dedicated Physical Sciences library on campus that houses excellent research material for the study of computer science, mathematics and physics.


Researcher Development Programme

Aberystwyth is committed to the provision of an appropriate level of training for all its postgraduate students. As such, all research postgraduates will undertake some institutionally-provided research training modules as part of the Researcher Development Programme.


About this course

Those interested in PhD study are encouraged to contact the department so that a viable research topic can be developed through discussion with members of staff with relevant research interests. Members of the department are always happy to consider research proposals relating to their research interests.


To apply for a place on the PhD programme you will need to prepare a research proposal, personal statement, complete an application form and provide two references.


Program Outline

There are about 20 students pursuing postgraduate research programmes in the Department at present, working alongside lecturers and research associates in a lively and well-integrated research community. Grants from Research Councils and other sources may be available through the Department.
