MSc Periodontology
Overview
The postgraduate programme in periodontology is designed to provide practitioners with in-depth evidence-based knowledge and technical skills that can be applied in their practice while pursuing a postgraduate education degree.
The structure of the programme allows practitioners to experience the surgical techniques in periodontology. You will work closely with the periodontal team to develop understanding, teamwork skills and confidence in treatment planning for advanced periodontal cases and in developing your own case portfolio. You will be taught by our internationally recognised academic staff and consultants as well as visiting experts in the field.

Programme Structure
- Year one: Three theoretical/practical units are delivered during year one through distance-learning material and self-directed study. Practical exercises will usually take place in our clinical skills suite on phantom heads or anatomy centre.
- Year two: A further three units are delivered through distance-learning material and self-directed work.
- Year three: An MSc will be awarded on successful completion of a research project and dissertation.
Clinical days are offered throughout all years of study, as an opportunity to gain additional experience in observing and treating patients.
Entry Requirements
- You will typically need a Bachelor of Dental Surgery or an equivalent United Kingdom General Dental Council-registrable dental qualification.
- You will also need at least two year's work experience in dentistry post graduation and must be registered with the UK General Dental Council; a current GDC registration certificate must be uploaded with the application.
- You must submit all required documents to the specifications detailed in the programme's Admissions Statement to be considered for review.
English Language Requirements
- If English is not your first language, you will need to reach the requirements outlined in our profile level B.
Fees and Funding
- Home: part-time (three years) - £9,300 per year
- Fees are subject to an annual review. For programmes that last longer than one year, please budget for up to an 8% increase in fees each year.

Funding and Scholarships
- To assist with the delivery of more advanced NHS dental care outside an acute hospital setting, Health Education England has teamed up with the NHS Local Dental Network to provide financial support for practitioners providing NHS services within the South West.
