Program Overview

This unique program combines audio and acoustics design with illumination design specialization, providing professionals and architecture graduates with an in-depth understanding of sensory design. Students will learn from leading researchers, engage in hands-on work, and gain industry experience through internships and international collaborations. Graduates can pursue careers in audio production, acoustics consulting, and lighting design, contributing to the creation of immersive and functional architectural environments.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

This unique program will allow you to build a deep foundation in the design, measurement and theory of audio and acoustics with an added specialisation in the lighting design field. This program is tailored for design and related built-environment professionals who wish to extend their expertise in audio and acoustics, and for graduates of the Bachelor of Architecture and Environments and Bachelor of Design in Architecture.

Outline:

  • Primary stream: Audio and Acoustics: Throughout the program, you will combine aesthetic sound design, new media, sound recording and system design with acoustic engineering, computer modelling and psychology.
  • You will build on a foundational understanding of the broader aspects of design science (including illumination, building services, sustainable design and indoor environment quality), with access to the School’s world-class facilities.
  • Secondary stream: Illumination Design: Throughout this course, you will learn how architectural lighting design shapes the visual environment experienced by building occupants.
  • By specifying light sources and control systems, determining their spatial arrangement, and considering the interaction between light and materials, you will discover how to influence the function and aesthetics of architectural spaces.

Teaching:

  • Your research-leading lecturers take you on site visits and expose you to a range of international collaborators.
  • You can use a wide range of electives to pursue your interests in the application of sustainable design theories and methods in architecture, planning, urban design, building services and facilities management.

Careers:

  • Your expertise in audio and acoustics could lead to vocational opportunities including audio production, sound design, audio systems design, acoustical consulting, and research and development of audio and acoustics products.
  • The secondary stream could lead to vocational opportunities including lighting designer or lighting specialist, or working with electrical products manufacturing, lighting management services or an energy services company

Other:

  • The course is 2 years full-time (available part-time).
  • Location: Camperdown/Darlington University of Sydney
  • Study Mode: Face to face
  • Total amount of credits points required to complete this course: 96
  • The University of Sydney is one of the world's top 20 universities .
  • Our building houses the only indoor environmental quality (IEQ) laboratory in the southern hemisphere, an extensive research lighting laboratory and outstanding audio and acoustics facilities, including an anechoic chamber and recording studio.
  • Opportunities for industry internships and international travel will further broaden your thinking as a design professional.
