About Program

Program Overview

This program combines audio and acoustics with high performance buildings, providing a solid foundation in design, measurement, and theory. Students will specialize in either audio and acoustics, leading to careers in audio production and acoustical consulting, or high performance buildings, preparing them for roles in building services, architecture, and sustainability. The program emphasizes hands-on experience through site visits, internships, and access to state-of-the-art facilities, including an anechoic chamber and recording studio.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

This unique program will allow you to build a deep foundation in the design, measurement and theory of audio and acoustics with an added specialisation in the emerging area of high performance buildings.

Outline:

Primary stream: Audio and acoustics

Throughout the program, you will combine aesthetic sound design, new media, sound recording and system design with acoustic engineering, computer modelling and psychology. You will build on a foundational understanding of the broader aspects of design science (including illumination, building services, sustainable design and indoor environment quality), with access to the School’s world-class facilities.

Secondary stream: High performance buildings

The High Performance Buildings stream integrates the various components of the built environment, namely Architectural and Building Services (design and operations), passive and active Sustainability, strategic and operational Facility Management and Property Economics (highlighting return on investment principles). You will have the opportunity to not only learn but also actively participate in research as part of your studies.

Careers:

Your expertise in audio and acoustics could lead to vocational opportunities including audio production, sound design, audio systems design, acoustical consulting, and research and development of audio and acoustics products. Our building houses the only indoor environmental quality (IEQ) laboratory in the southern hemisphere, an extensive research lighting laboratory and outstanding audio and acoustics facilities, including an anechoic chamber and recording studio. Opportunities for industry internships and international travel will further broaden your thinking as a design professional. You'll have opportunities to attend workshops run by international scholars and display your work in our Tin Sheds Gallery.
