Designed for science graduates, our Master of Nutrition and Dietetics is a gateway to a dietetics career, offering hands-on nutrition training and a pathway to leading-edge dietetic and nutrition research and practice.
Outline:
Our Master of Nutrition and Dietetics is a postgraduate professional coursework degree to prepare students to work in all the major areas of nutrition and dietetics. It builds on major concepts from the study of human biochemistry, physiology, nutrition science and other biosciences. Our course will provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to work in public health nutrition and health promotion, individual patient case management, food service management, and research and evaluation. You will complete a prescribed program of core units in your first year covering topics such as nutritional and behavioural sciences, communication, counselling and education skills, dietary assessment, medical nutrition therapy and the role of diet in health and disease. In your second year you will complete a training placement comprising 20 weeks of individual case management, community and food service placement training. Additionally, you will undertake a semester of nutrition research, which may include a small survey, laboratory work, hospital project, secondary data analysis, or a literature review.

This program is directed by Professor Anna Rangan. This program is accredited by the Dietitians Australia (DA). Graduates are eligible to apply to DA to join the provisional Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) program. Our program is accredited by the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA), which means you will be career-ready when you graduate. The second year of study will commence in late January for students on placement in Semester 1, or late June / early July for second semester placement. During your placement semester, you will participate in individual case management, community and food service placement training. For the individual case management dietetics placement, you will typically be attached to two or more teaching hospitals and their associated centres, where you will be supervised by Accredited Practising Dietitians. The majority of time is spent in either inpatient or outpatient settings of mainly public hospitals. Six weeks are spent in the community gaining experience in community and public health nutrition and four weeks in food service management. - Bachelor of Science degree with a credit average.
- Prerequisite units of study (completed within the last 10 years):
- 12 credit points of junior chemistry, or equivalent;
- 12 credit points of junior human biology, or equivalent;
- 12 credit points of intermediate or senior Biochemistry and/or Molecular Biology, or equivalent;
- 12 credit points of intermediate or senior Human Physiology, or equivalent;
- 6 credit points of intermediate or senior Nutrition Science, or equivalent;
- 6 credit points of intermediate or senior Food Science, or equivalent.
