Degree Overview:
The 4+1 BS/MS program in Civil Engineering allows students to earn both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering within a five-year timeframe. The program is identical to the individual B.S. and M.S. degrees offered by the Civil Engineering Department. The combined program enables students to obtain these degrees in less time than pursuing them independently, potentially leading to higher salaries upon entering the workforce.

- The program is open to all undergraduate students at UMass Amherst who are enrolled as Civil Engineering majors.
- Application is made in the spring of junior year, and admission is typically offered to students with GPAs in the top 33% of their class.
- Students can transfer up to 12 credits of graduate-level coursework (500 level and above) from their undergraduate years.
- The GRE exam requirement is waived for UMass Amherst CE students.
- Students can specialize in one of the following Civil Engineering research areas: Transportation Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering and Mechanics, or Environmental Engineering.
