Program Overview


The Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology program at UMass Amherst prepares students for a career as a certified veterinary technologist. The four-year program includes two years on the Amherst campus and two at the Mount Ida campus in Newton, Massachusetts. Students learn veterinary technology and clinical nursing, then specialize in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and other advanced courses. Degree Overview:

The Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology (BS-vet tech) program at UMass Amherst prepares students for a career as a veterinary technologist in the fields of veterinary medicine and biomedical research. The program is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and prepares students to take the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) to earn certification as a veterinary technologist.

  • The first two years of the program are spent at the UMass Amherst campus, learning in state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories, and farms.
  • The following two years are spent at the dedicated Veterinary Technology facility at UMass Amherst's Mount Ida campus in Newton, Massachusetts.
  • Students develop a foundation in veterinary technology and clinical nursing for animals, then move on to advanced courses in areas including anatomy and physiology, veterinary pharmacology, parasitology, pathology, small animal anesthesia and surgery, and more.
  • During senior year, students participate in internships at veterinary clinics and research animal facilities.
