This 8-week, specialized Postgraduate Micro-credential short course explores the implementation of thoughtful and effective digital artefacts for learning in a contemporary education landscape underpinned by technology.


Objectives:

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Appreciate contemporary technologies used in education.
  • Evaluate technologies that could be used in education for feasibility, viability and desirability.
  • Appreciate web security and its implications for education.
  • Understand a range of technology standards.
  • Specify, design and implement a digital artefact for education.

Teaching:

  • The course is taught by Dr Jonathan Watkins, Lecturer in digital technologies.
  • He has over 10 years’ experience using computer algebra systems for assessment and learning, and he has delivered seminars around the world to disseminate best practice in the field.
  • Jonathan has a background in Theoretical Physics and has current research interests in applying data science techniques to education research.

Other:

  • Learners will be fully registered University of Birmingham students and will be entitled to normal University services (including library and digital resources).
  • The course is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge to design programmes of learning which will meet the needs of a wide range of learners and organisations in an expanding field.
  • You will work with academics, active practitioners and designers of learning environments from the fields of education, computer science, theoretical physics and engineering - each bringing their own unique disciplinary perspectives to instructional design.
  • Technology is changing the way education is delivered, and the pace of this change is accelerating.
  • Technologies allow educators to access new paradigms of education, enabling state-of-the-art forms of learning and assessment, and optimising long-standing education workflows.
  • Once you have finished this 8-week course, you will be awarded an official University of Birmingham Postgraduate Micro-credential certificate (worth 10 academic credits) and a transcript.

  • Applicants must possess (or be predicted to obtain) an upper second-class degree or equivalent from a UK university or recognized international institution.
  • Lower Second-Class Degree + Work Experience: Alternatively, applicants may be eligible with a lower second-class degree plus 2 years' work experience in design, computing, or education.
  • No Degree + Work Experience: Applicants with no degree but 5 or more years' work experience in design, computing, or education may also be considered.
