Advanced Clinical Practice (Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy) Level 7 Degree Apprenticeship MSc

The Advanced Clinical Practice (Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy) Level 7 Degree Apprenticeship MSc is designed for registered physiotherapists who wish to develop their skills and knowledge in advanced clinical practice within the field of musculoskeletal physiotherapy. This programme is accredited by the Centre for Advancing Practice and fulfils the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapy (IFOMPT) Educational Standards.


Course Overview

This apprenticeship programme supports the development of highly skilled registered musculoskeletal physiotherapists to enable delivery of clinical practice to an advanced level within a variety of clinical specialities and practice areas. The programme is designed to tackle the challenges faced by today's healthcare services and providers, with a clear focus on the four pillars of advanced clinical practice: Clinical Practice, Education, Leadership, and Research.


Course Structure

The course will run over 3 years, part-time, and includes:


  • 100 credits of taught modules
  • A 40-credit research project
  • A 20-credit end point assessment
  • 37 hours of supervised clinical practice, worth 20 credits

Year 1

  • Advanced Clinical Decision making (20 credits)
  • Advanced Clinical Practice Portfolio (Year 1) (0 credits)
  • Advanced Physical Health Assessment (20 credits)
  • The Reflective Advanced Practitioner (20 credits)

Year 2

  • Continuing Professional Development and Mentored Practice (20 credits)
  • Advanced Clinical Practice Portfolio (Year 2) (0 credits)
  • Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy 1: Lower Quadrant (20 credits)
  • Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy 2: Upper Quadrant (20 credits)

Year 3

  • Advanced Clinical Practice Portfolio (Year 3) (0 credits)
  • Advanced Practice Research Project (40 credits)
  • Consolidation of Advanced Clinical Practice: End Point Assessment (20 credits)

Entry Requirements

To gain a place at Birmingham, you will need to meet the general entry requirements, as well as those specific to the course. Your application will be reviewed by the course's Admissions Tutor, who will decide whether your application should receive an offer.


  • A honours degree or equivalent professional qualification in your clinical field of practice
  • Employed by a health or social care organisation
  • Current registration as a physiotherapist with the HCPC
  • At least 36 months clinical experience post qualification
  • Evidence of at least 1,500 hours post qualifying experience in musculoskeletal physiotherapy
  • Demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development that shows an ability to study at Masters level

Fees and Scholarships

This course is fully funded via the employer Apprenticeship Levy, and there will be no costs incurred by you.


Career Opportunities

This apprenticeship equips registered physiotherapists with the practical knowledge and theoretical understanding needed to undertake advanced clinical practice roles within the field of musculoskeletal physiotherapy. Please note that this programme does not offer a route to HCPC registration/employment in the UK.
