Program Overview
This 8-week Postgraduate Micro-credential course explores classic and contemporary learning theories, their influence on learning environments, and practical applications in real-life scenarios. Students will examine behavioral, cognitive, social, and network perspectives, evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, and develop appropriate assessment strategies. Upon completion, participants receive a University of Birmingham certificate and 10 academic credits that can be applied towards the full Online PGCert Design for Learning Environments qualification.

Degree Overview:
This 8-week, specialized Postgraduate Micro-credential short course will cover both classic and contemporary theories associated with learning, and how these theories influence the design of learning environments.
Objectives:
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Evaluate behavioural, cognitive and social perspectives on learning.
- Examine and critically evaluate classic and contemporary learning theories for the learning environments.
- Apply learning theories to real life scenarios to critique their strengths and weakness in practice.
Teaching:
- The course is taught by Adam Matthews, Lecturer in Technology and Learning Environments, and Dr Jaimie Miller-Friedmann, Postdoctoral Researcher in Science Education.
- The course is delivered online.
Other:
- This course introduces several perspectives and theories on learning. It is a broad and introductory module which will give students the starting points to explore different theories which suit their interests and fields of practice.
- Once you have finished this 8-week course, you will be awarded an official University of Birmingham Postgraduate Micro-credential certificate (worth 10 academic credits) and a transcript.
- Learners will be fully registered University of Birmingham students and will be entitled to normal University services (including library and digital resources).
The cost to study this online course is £850 . This must be paid in full before enrolling. The fee includes any online resources, including full access to the online learning platform, course materials and required digital reading materials.

Entry Requirements:
- Upper Second-Class Degree or Equivalent: Applicants must possess (or be predicted to obtain) an upper second-class degree or equivalent from a UK university or recognized international institution.
- Lower Second-Class Degree with Work Experience: Individuals with a lower second-class degree may be eligible if they have 2 years of work experience in design, computing, or education.
- Work Experience Without Degree: Applicants without a degree may be considered if they have 5 or more years of work experience in design, computing, or education.
Language Proficiency Requirements:
- English as a First Language: No specific requirements.
- English as a Second Language: Applicants whose first language is not English must provide an up-to-date English language test certificate. The accepted certificate is Academic IELTS with a minimum score of 6.5 overall and no less than 6.0 in any band. Other forms of English language certificates may be accepted, and applicants should discuss this with a recruitment coordinator.
