Program Overview


Medicine BM6 Widening Participation (BMBS)

Overview

This course is designed to widen participation in medicine. It is a 6-year programme that includes a foundation year (Year 0) to build skills and confidence in key physiological, anatomical, and biochemical concepts and principles.


Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet three of the following six eligibility criteria:


  • First-generation applicant to Higher Education (HE)
  • Parents, guardian, or self are currently in receipt of a means-tested benefit
  • Young person looked after by a Local Authority (for a period of longer than 3 months)
  • Current resident in an area with a postcode that falls within the lowest 20% of the IMD (Index of Multiple Deprivation), or a member of a traveling family
  • In receipt of free school meals during GCSE Years 10-11 (for at least one term/2 months) and/or 16-19 Bursary/EMA
  • A current young carer, either registered with the local council or with a reference from a teacher/tutor to confirm

Academic Requirements

  • Minimum BBB or above including Biology and one additional science (with a pass in the practical element where it is separately endorsed)
  • Acceptable science subjects are Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Sociology, Environmental Studies, or Geography
  • Subjects where there may be considerable overlap of material will not be accepted in combination

  • Phase 1: The Fundamentals of Medicine (Years 1-2)
  • Phase 2: Progression into Clinical Practice (Year 3)
  • Phase 3: Developing Clinical Practice (Year 4)
  • Phase 4: Preparing for Independent Practice (Year 5)

Fees and Funding

  • Tuition fees for UK students: £9,535
  • The course is not available to EU and international students
  • Vaccinations and immunization costs are not included in the tuition fees
  • £100 per year towards travel costs associated with clinical placement
  • Medical insurance if you choose to do an elective in another country
