Nursing (Child) (BSc)
Overview
This degree provides you with the skills, knowledge, and experience to provide compassionate care for neonates, children, adolescents, and their families. After graduating, you can register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a children's nurse.
Entry Requirements
Academic Requirements
- A-levels: BBB (excluding General Studies and Critical Thinking)
- International Baccalaureate Diploma: Pass with 30 points overall with 15 points at Higher Level
- BTEC: DDM in the BTEC National Extended Diploma
- Access to HE Diploma: 60 credits with a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3, of which 30 must be at Distinction and 9 credits at Merit
- Irish Leaving Certificate: H2 H2 H3 H3 H3 H3
- Scottish Qualification: Offers will be based on exams being taken at the end of S6
- Cambridge Pre-U: M2 M2 M2 in three Principal subjects
- Welsh Baccalaureate: BBB from 3 A levels or BB from two A levels and B from the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificate
- T-Level: An overall Merit with grade B in the core element in the Health or Healthcare Science T-Level
Non-Academic Requirements
- You must have completed recent, relevant study within 5 years
- Occupational Health and Vaccinations: Completion and confirmation of a satisfactory health screening including confirmation of appropriate vaccinations will be a condition of your offer
- Declaration of Good Character and Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS): You will be required to complete a satisfactory, University of Southampton Self-Declaration of Good Character form
Course Structure
You'll study this degree full-time over 3 years. The course comprises a minimum of 4,600 hours as specified by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) 2018.
Year 1
- Introduction to the nature of the NHS and professional practice
- Principles of person-centred nursing and the nurse's role in meeting people's fundamental care needs across all ages
- Sciences that underpin nursing care – life sciences, health psychology, pharmacology, genomics
- 2 practice placements
Year 2
- Research methods
- Assessment, consultation and clinical reasoning skills in children's nursing practice
- Care needs of children experiencing acute changes to their health
- Nurse's role in co-ordinating care and supporting children and young people living with long-term conditions
- 2 practice placements
Year 3
- Leadership, and managing innovation and change
- Independent research project
- Consolidation of learning as a child field nurse
