Program Overview

Amputation and Prosthetic Rehabilitation (MSc)

About this course

The Amputation and Prosthetic Rehabilitation MSc is a flexible programme of higher-level study suitable for both clinicians and non-clinicians who would like to work in this field. Our programme, which can be studied either full time of part time, will enable you to learn about a patient’s journey from pre-amputation to prosthetic rehabilitation, exploring the physical and psychological aspects of patient care.

This course is subject to Programme Approval and Review.

This course is a great way to improve your specialist knowledge if you already work, or would like to work, in this area. It’s ideal for multidisciplinary healthcare professionals from backgrounds such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, prosthetics and orthotics, engineering, nursing and other related professions.

You’ll explore contemporary issues related to limb loss, and develop expertise in research, clinical practice and commerce. This will involve studying a wide range of current issues facing the delivery of amputation and prosthetic rehabilitation in a variety of different settings, including:

  • adult and children’s services within the NHS and other healthcare organisations
  • global issues related to limb loss and access to prosthetic service
  • prosthetic componentry and the prosthetic industry
  • charity settings across different sectors
  • engagement in occupations
  • exercise and paralympic sport
  • the military

The course is delivered by healthcare rehabilitation experts whose amputation and prosthetics research is helping to develop the field. It also looks at the perspectives of patients, families, carers and clinicians taking a person-centred approach.

This Amputation and Prosthetic Rehabilitation MSc is endorsed by the British Association of Chartered Physiotherapist in Amputee Rehabilitation (BACPAR).

As a student at a Russell Group university you’ll benefit from research-led learning throughout your study and you’ll be supported by academics who are recognised experts in their fields.

Flexible study

If you prefer, you can apply to study this course as:

  • part-time master's - study the same course content between 2 and 4 years

You can also take a single module as part of continuing professional development (CPD). Explore modules that are available as CPD.

Your modules and fees may vary if you choose a different study option.

We regularly review our courses to ensure and improve quality. This course may be revised as a result of this. Any revision will be balanced against the requirement that the student should receive the educational service expected. Find out why, when, and how we might make changes.

Our courses are regulated in England by the Office for Students (OfS).

Find the equivalent international qualifications for your country.

As well as the academic requirements, we expect you to show a strong understanding of the remit of the programme being in prosthetic rehabilitation (i.e. not general rehabilitation), and a genuine interest in this area.

English language requirements

If English isn't your first language, you'll need to complete an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) to demonstrate your competence in English. You'll need all of the following scores as a minimum:

  • overall score: 6.5
  • reading: 6.0
  • writing: 6.0
  • speaking: 6.0
  • listening: 6.0

If you do not meet the English language requirements through a test or qualification, you may be able to meet them by completing one of our pre-sessional English programmes before your course starts.

If you don’t meet the English language requirements, you can achieve the level you need by completing a pre-sessional English programme before you start your course.

Pre-masters

If you don’t meet the academic requirements, you can complete a pre-master's programme through our partnership with OnCampus. Learn more about the programmes available.

Recognition of professional experience

If you don't have the exact entry requirements, but you have significant work experience in this sector we’ll assess your relevant professional experience, your subject knowledge and your aptitude for learning.

Your application will be considered on individual merit and you may be asked to attend an interview.

Course structure

The flexible nature of the course means that you can bring credits from other universities. You can also select modules from the Health Sciences portfolio. If you can’t find a module to suit your needs you can choose to study an ‘open’ module. This type of module will involve working with an academic coach and creating your own learning outcomes.

You’ll normally complete the full MSc award in 12 to 18 months of full-time study, or 2 to 5 years of part-time study. Our modules are developed in partnerships with the British Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Amputee Rehabilitation (BACPAR) and bring together experts in clinical practice, research and enterprise.

The course focuses on 3 key areas:

  • amputee rehabilitation and prosthetic use
  • contemporary issues in limb loss
  • research methods

You’ll spend between 250 and 400 hours of study time on each module.

The modules outlined provide examples of what you can expect to learn on this degree course based on recent academic teaching. As a research-led University, we undertake a continuous review of our course to ensure quality enhancement and to manage our resources. The precise modules available to you in future years may vary depending on staff availability and research interests, new topics of study, timetabling and student demand. Find out why, when and how we might make changes.

For entry in academic year 2025 to 2026

Year 1 modules

You must study the following modules:

Amputation Rehabilitation and Prosthetic Use

This module is designed to provide students from a range of multidisciplinary backgrounds, such as Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Nurses, Prosthetists and Engineers with the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of rehabilitation following amputation and prosthetic use.

Contemporary Issues in Limb Loss

This module is designed to provide students from a range of multidisciplinary backgrounds, such as Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Nurses, Prosthetists, podiatrists and Engineers with the opportunity to explore contemporary issues related to limb loss.

MSc Dissertation 10 month

This module will provide you with the opportunity to plan, undertake and report on an independent, original project which is relevant to your current or future area of practice and is appropriate to the Award you are following. This version of the Dissertation is for students who are studying on a full-time basis.

Research methods

This module aims to support you in enhancing your knowledge, skills and understanding required for the acquisition and critical appraisal of research literature, and other evidences, used to inform evidence based practice (EBP) in your area of health and/or social care.

Learning and assessment

Learning

Teaching and learning methods include:

  • lectures
  • group seminars
  • work-based learning
  • supervised and self-directed study

These methods are designed to integrate theory and practice and to encourage a spirit of enquiry.

We’ll encourage you to take part in a wide range of activities that promote meaningful discussion, debate and application to the post-amputation rehabilitation process. The peer directed learning approach works well due to the multidisciplinary nature of the field and the possible mix of UK and international students. It will provide opportunities to learn and connect with different cultures and clinical/professional settings.

Assessment

For the Contemporary Issues in Limb Loss module, you’ll need to write a 3,000-word assignment on a key issue discussed in the module.

For the Amputee Rehabilitation and Prosthetic Use module, you’ll need to complete a:

  • formative assignment
  • summative assessment

The summative assessment, made up of 2 components, is marked and contributes to the final module mark. You'll need to achieve a pass of at least 50% in both components.

We will not mark the formative assessment, and it does not contribute to your overall module mark. The goal of the formative assignment is to provide you with feedback and help you identify strengths and weaknesses in your work. The formative assignment has been designed to contain elements that are important for the summative (marked assessment) to help you improve your learning.

Dissertation

You’ll need to write a dissertation around a topic of your choice.

Past students have written about topics such as:

  • the changing world of amputation and prosthetic rehabilitation
  • global challenges and worldwide issues
  • current debates in diabetes management and advances in skin health
  • advances in engineering and prosthetic development

Academic Support

We’ll assign you a personal tutor, and you’ll have access to a senior tutor.
