Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The ME Electrical Power Engineering program is a two-year, full-time Master of Engineering program designed to educate professional engineers to excel in the sustainable power system and smart grid sectors. It is professionally accredited by Engineers Ireland and recognized by the Washington Accord for Chartered Engineer status.

Objectives:

The program aims to equip graduates with:

  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of the mathematics, sciences, data science, analytics, and other technologies underpinning electrical power engineering, with a focus on sustainable power systems, smart grid applications, and power electronics technology.
  • The ability to identify, formulate, and analyze complex electrical power engineering problems, placed in the wide context of smart grid applications, power electronic systems, and electricity market economics.
  • The ability to investigate, experiment, and apply standard and specialized research methods, using industry standard software tools, specialist research tools, and laboratory facilities.
  • Understanding of, and commitment to, professional and ethical responsibilities towards people and the environment in the practice of electrical power engineering.
  • The ability to work effectively independently and in diverse and inclusive teams, and to prepare for lifelong learning.

Teaching:

  • The program is taught by a strong cohort of experienced and internationally recognized academic staff, including five IEEE Fellows.
  • Teaching methods and assessment procedures vary across the program to suit the wide range of subjects offered, and include individual and group analytical studies, practical work, development of research conference papers, and group debates.
  • There is a strong laboratory component, allowing students to experience the practical aspects of electrical power engineering, while assignments provide complex design and problem-solving challenges.

Careers:

  • Graduates will be attractive to a wide variety of technical and managerial roles in the electrical utility and smart grid sectors on an international scale, e.g.
  • ABB, Alstom, EDF, EirGrid, EPRI, ESB, GE, NREL, Siemens.
  • The ME program also provides an excellent starting point for those aiming for a PhD program and a research career within a university or specialized research institution.

Other:

  • The program includes a six-month work experience internship in the first year, building upon the strong collaborative links with a large number of companies, both indigenous and multinational companies, for placements within Ireland and internationally.
  • In the final year, a substantial research project draws together many of the separate strands of learning, with an emphasis on independent learning, research methods, technical design & analysis, and communication skills.
  • A wide range of modern industry standard software tools for power system analysis and laboratory facilities are integrated into the taught and project-based modules.
  • A real-time digital simulator and smart grid consumer laboratory (supported by EPRI) are also available for hardware in the loop testing and development of prototypes.

Finished my Masters in Food Safety here in 2019. Quality of education is pretty good. Facilities are on point. One of the better universities in Ireland. A lot of extra curricular activities organised all round the year. No racism or any other issue as per my experience. Teaching staff is quite knowledgeable. I loved my time there. 10/10
