Overview of the Irish Family History: Intermediate Level Course

The Irish Family History: Intermediate Level course is designed for individuals who have completed the introduction module and wish to further their knowledge in this area. This lecture-only course explores the Irish diaspora, focusing on various aspects such as military, mercantile, civilian, political, and criminal exiles and convicts, adventurers, and orphans. The course delves into the experiences of these groups in Irish and overseas archives.

Course Structure

• The course consists of 16 lectures, divided into two semesters, with eight lectures in each semester.
• The lectures take place on Mondays from 6-7 pm on Zoom.
• It is essential to note that the lectures are not recorded.

Course Content

• Building on the theoretical foundations established in the introduction module, the course moves into experiential learning, offering the option of project work in the second term.
• The course explores demographic groups that are more challenging to trace, including:
  • Finding women in historical sources
  • Researching Irish Travellers before 1950
  • Children in care from the 1840s to 1952
• There is a continuing emphasis on the appropriate methodology for family and social history research to achieve successful outcomes.

Requirements and Fees

• Participants must have access to their own computers at home for follow-up clinics and research, as this is a lecture-only course without access to on-campus computers.
• The course fees are as follows:
  • €275 for the full course
  • €150 per semester
  • A concession rate of €149 for the full course or €90 per semester is available for those who are retired, over 65, on a government pension/payment plan, or unwaged, including second and third-level students.

Additional Information

• The course commences the week beginning September 29, 2025, and recommences on January 19, 2026.
• Enrolments for this course open in mid-August, and applications can be made online or by telephone.
• It is crucial to note that the course does not include access to computers on campus, and participants must have their own computers for research and follow-up clinics.
