Program Overview

Molecular Medicine (P.Grad.Dip)

NFQ Level 9

Overview

Molecular Medicine is set to play an increasingly important role in the practice of medicine and research in the biological, medical and pharmaceutical/life science arenas and this will have broad ramifications on society and the economy. These require significant infrastructural capacity, key among these being trained personnel. Individuals conversant with key developments in Molecular Medicine will be required in the clinical, research and industrial arenas. Biotech companies need a cadre of individuals trained to the highest degree in the life sciences at all levels of management. So too will individuals who wish to undertake entrepreneurial business developments. The issue of adequate training of personnel in science is a national concern that our programmes in Molecular Medicine seek to address.

Like the M.Sc., the P.Grad.Dip. can be held over a one-year full-time or two-year part-time basis. The Diploma offers a comprehensive and contemporary overview of the area, given by experts in their fields and provides students with the knowledge to evaluate the literature and perform independent research.

The Postgraduate Diploma has the same high standards of the M.Sc. but does not require a commitment of three months full-time laboratory work. This makes it ideal for candidates in established careers with limited available time.

Is This Course For Me?

This course is designed for students with a primary degree in Biology, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and other related scientific disciplines.

Career Opportunities

Ideal for candidates in established careers with limited available time, this course allows people working in business, clinical industry, or other disciplines, to gain a comprehensive knowledge in Molecular Medicine with a view to progress professionally or go on to do a higher degree.

Course Structure

The programme is made up of taught modules (55 ECTS) and the Research Skills module (15 ECTS) only.

  • Students will be introduced, initially at a basic level, to technical skills in molecular and cell biology through selecting subjects from the core and advanced module options.
  • The course is divided into 11 modules from which students will select 9 modules, allowing the student to tailor the programme to their individual needs.
    • Modules include:
      • Cellular Biology & Cell Signalling Mechanisms
      • Introduction to Genetics and Development
      • Molecular Oncology
      • Human Genetics
      • Molecular and Cellular Immunology
      • Infectious Agents, Biology & Clinical Implications
      • Molecular Mechanisms of Human Disease I & II
