Overview of the Childhood Adversity Micro-credential
The Childhood Adversity Micro-credential is a 10 ECTS, Level 9 program designed for professionals working with children and families in healthcare, community, and education settings. This micro-credential aims to provide a fundamental understanding of childhood adversity and its impact on the health and well-being of children.
Who Should Take This Micro-credential?
This program is suitable for professionals including children’s nurses, other nursing disciplines, allied healthcare professionals, social care professionals, education professionals (teachers), and professionals in child and family support work or related areas.
Why Take This Micro-credential?
The primary objective of this micro-credential is to enable professionals to develop a comprehensive understanding of childhood adversity and how it can impact the life of a child. It also provides professionals with the knowledge and skills to approach their work with children and families in a trauma and adversity-informed manner.
When Can I Start This Micro-credential?
There is one intake annually, in January.
What Do I Need?
To be eligible for this program, applicants must:
- Hold a Level 8 degree in a health or social care-related program or in an education program.
- Or satisfy the course committee that they can successfully complete the micro-credential program based on evidence of experience working in education, healthcare, or social care settings.
- Provide prerequisite documents including a CV, Professional Reference, and Degree Certificate.
What Will I Learn?
Upon completing this micro-credential, learners will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of childhood adversity and describe how it can impact the life of a child from various perspectives.
- Critically discuss national and international literature concerning childhood adversity and its implications for professional disciplines and work with children and families.
- Critique current strategies used to identify childhood adversity.
- Critically appraise adversity prevention strategies relevant to the learner’s professional discipline and area of work.
- Demonstrate an understanding of trauma and trauma-informed approaches, reflecting on the application of these approaches in working with children and families.
- Demonstrate knowledge and discuss interventions relevant to the learner’s professional discipline and area of work.
What Will I Do?
The program involves:
- Engaging in online directed and self-directed learning activities.
- Participating in discussions on key issues and peer-to-peer learning groups.
- Developing a Reflective Diary Piece.
- Developing a case study relevant to the learner’s work with children and families.
How Will This Micro-credential Be Delivered?
The micro-credential will be delivered in a blended format (in-person/online), including synchronous learning sessions (live lectures, real-time group work exercises, and real-time seminars) and asynchronous learner sessions (short quizzes, watch and reflect exercises, podcasts, and reflection on learning progress).
How Is This Micro-credential Assessed?
Assessment consists of:
- A case study relevant to the learner’s work with children and families (80% of the overall mark).
- A Reflective Diary Piece (20% of the overall mark).
