Program Overview
Overview of the Geography and Geoscience Program
The Geography and Geoscience program at Trinity College Dublin is a four-year, full-time course that leads to a B.A. (Moderatorship) Honours Bachelor Degree (NFQ Level 8). This multi-disciplinary program is designed to address critical challenges facing the Earth system and humanity in the 21st century. It integrates knowledge from the physical, chemical, biological, and social sciences to develop novel insights into Earth system function and human-environment interactions.
Structure of the Program
The program is structured into four years, with the first and second years providing a broad grounding in both Geography and Geoscience. The third and fourth years allow students to deepen their knowledge in specialist areas while further developing a portfolio of practical and technical skills.
First and Second Years
In the first and second years, students acquire a broad grounding in both Geography and Geoscience, with an emphasis on physical geography, geology, and human-environment interactions. They learn about topical issues such as climate change, natural hazards, energy, sustainability, and natural resources.
Third and Fourth Years
In the third and fourth years, students deepen their knowledge in specialist areas, such as:
- Geomorphology
- Globalisation
- Sustainability

Dual B.A. Programme
The Dual B.A. Programme between Trinity College Dublin and Columbia University is also available for students interested in studying History of Art and Architecture. However, this program is only open to Single Honours students, and Joint Honours students cannot apply. The admissions process includes a review of the applicant's academic history, letters of recommendation, an essay, and an interview conducted in English. Standardized test scores (SAT/ACT) can be submitted but are not required for 2025 entry. Applications are reviewed by a joint committee with representatives from both institutions. EU applicants to the Dual B.A. Programme must also apply to and receive an offer from their chosen program at Trinity through the Central Applications Office (CAO).
