Program Overview
Program Overview
The M.Sc. in Diagnostic Radiography is a two-year full-time program offered by the School of Medicine at Trinity College Dublin. This program is designed to provide high-quality academic education and practical training to enable graduates to practice safely and independently as diagnostic radiographers.
Course Structure
The program is an accelerated course of study, delivered over two years. It comprises separate lecture blocks and clinical placement blocks, with students breaking for two weeks at Christmas and three weeks over the summer. Lecture blocks are mainly covered during September to June, with some clinical placement blocks. Students spend the majority of the summer period in clinical placement, developing the required practical radiography skills.
Course Content
The program consists of 13 core modules, amounting to a total credit weighting of 120 ECTS. In Year 1, students cover:
- Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathology for Medical Imaging (5 ECTS)
- Clinical Radiography (10 ECTS)
- Science for Medical Imaging (10 ECTS)
- Radiographic Technology and Digital Imaging (5 ECTS)
- Image Interpretation (5 ECTS)
- Patient Care Skills and Introduction to Human Sciences (5 ECTS)
- Clinical Placement 1 (10 ECTS)
- Clinical Placement 2 (10 ECTS)
In Year 2, students cover:
- Specialised Radiographic Imaging (10 ECTS)
- Internship in a Specialised Imaging Modality (5 ECTS)
- Leadership and Quality in Diagnostic Radiography (5 ECTS)
- Clinical Placement 3 (10 ECTS)
- Research Dissertation (30 ECTS)
Modules are assessed primarily by written examination, OSCE examination, written assignment, clinical assessments, and oral presentations. The final mark is based on a credit-weighted average of the mark awarded in each module. A 50% pass mark is required for all elements in each of the modules.
Admission Requirements
Prospective students will be graduates with a science or healthcare-related undergraduate degree (at minimum 2.1 level). Graduates from other disciplines may also be considered. Other applications may be considered in exceptional circumstances based on workplace experience. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for interview, which will be adjudged based on:
- Personal motivation
- Communication skills
- Academic achievements (including qualifications and research to date)
- Technical knowledge of diagnostic radiography
Students will also be required to undergo Garda Vetting.
English Language Requirements
All applicants to Trinity are required to provide official evidence of proficiency in the English language. Applicants to this course are required to meet Band B (Standard Entry) English language requirements.
