Program Outline

Degree Overview:

This is a two-year, accelerated Orthoptics MSc program designed to prepare students for a career in orthoptics. The program aims to equip students with the necessary clinical skills and theoretical knowledge to practice as an Orthoptist. Upon graduation, students are eligible to register with the Health Care Professions Council and practice under the protected title 'Orthoptist'.

Objectives:

  • To provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the theory and practice of orthoptics.
  • To develop students' clinical skills in the investigation and management of a range of eye conditions.
  • To equip students with the necessary research skills to contribute to the development of evidence-based practice in orthoptics.
  • To prepare students for a rewarding and varied career in orthoptics.

Program Description:

The program consists of seven modules delivered over two years, broadly categorized into three main themes: 'Orthoptic Clinical Practice and Theory', 'Ophthalmology and Optics', and 'Research Methods in Healthcare Practice'. Clinical education is a key component of the program, delivered through clinical placements and high-fidelity clinical simulation experiences at the University. The program emphasizes evidence-based practice and aims to develop students into confident, independent orthoptists.

Outline:

Year One:

  • Compulsory Modules:
  • Orthoptic Clinical Practice and Theory I (ORTH421):
  • This module introduces the theory of orthoptic investigation and management, focusing on concomitant and incomitant strabismus. It develops fundamental skills and theoretical knowledge for orthoptic clinical practice. Assessment includes practical assessments, a written examination, a clinical placement, and a reflective portfolio. It also equips students with knowledge related to the use of medicines in ophthalmic practice. Assessment includes a practical examination and a written examination. It provides in-depth knowledge of neuroanatomy related to vision and eye movements. Assessment includes a written examination.
  • Research Methods in Healthcare Practice (HEAL417): This module enables students to develop a research proposal for a review of evidence, empirical project, clinical audit, or service evaluation.
  • It aims to develop students' research knowledge and skills for their master's level research project. Assessment includes a Research Proposal.

Year Two:

  • Compulsory Modules:
  • Dissertation: Healthcare Practice (HEAL418):
  • This module involves the completion of a dissertation, allowing students to undertake a piece of empirical research, a service evaluation/audit, or a review of evidence in their chosen field of interest.
  • Ophthalmology and Optics II (ORTH423): This module builds upon the previous Ophthalmology and Optics module, developing students' skills in refraction and ophthalmological examinations.
  • It also covers interdisciplinary working and policy evaluation related to orthoptic roles. Assessment includes a practical examination and an assignment in the form of a personal development plan.
  • ORTHOPTIC CLINICAL PRACTICE AND THEORY II (ORTH424): This module expands upon the content delivered in Year One, focusing on the investigation and management of concomitant and incomitant strabismus and amblyopia.
  • Assessment includes a written exam, a practical exam, and a clinical placement assessment.

Course Schedule:

The program is delivered using a hybrid model, combining on-campus and online teaching blocks. Online blocks range from 1-5 weeks, while on-campus blocks range from 2-7 weeks. The program incorporates simulation weeks delivered on campus.
