Program Overview


This 15-credit online module explores children's cognitive development, learning theories, language-learning interactions, and individual learning differences. Through guided independent study, students gain proficiency in e-resources and hone their academic writing skills, discussing theories and applying them to their practice.

Program Outline


Degree Overview:

This module presents theories of cognitive development; how these inform our understanding of children’s learning and the development of educational practice; and the interaction of learning and language. The individual differences in learning abilities between children in school are considered, including those children who may have significant difficulties across all learning, and those who may have specific difficulty with certain aspects of learning. The module promotes students’ skills in distance/e-learning, participation in online activity and use of e-resources.


Assessment:

A 3,000-word assignment


Teaching:

The module content is delivered online and includes guided independent study, using online reading material available from the University Library. Students are supported by University tutors via online discussion boards and email. Online learning will be supplemented by an optional 2-day study block in Sheffield.


Other:

Suitable for Speech and Language Therapists, teachers and other professionals working with children. Students who are new to online learning and/or students embarking on post-graduate study for the first time or after a break (enhanced focus on online study skills is part of the module). Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students are expected to be able to: Demonstrate proficiency in the use of e-resources to support their learning. Write an academic assignment. Demonstrate informed knowledge and understanding of children’s cognitive development, and of theories of learning. Discuss the interactions between language and learning. Discuss individual differences in children’s learning. Timetable The module starts in mid/late September of each year. The module runs over a period of 12 weeks. This 15-credit module should take about 150 hours to complete (including preparation for the assignment).
