Academic English Language Programme (AELP)
The Academic English Language Programme (AELP) is a comprehensive course that aims to develop students' reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. The programme consists of several levels, including ENG101 and ENG102.
ENG102
ENG102 is an academic reading and writing course that provides a powerful introduction to a range of academic subjects. The course code is ENG 102 (PET), and it consists of 2 credit hours. The prerequisites for this course are a Cambridge Placement Test score or completion of ENG101. The textbook used for this course is Cambridge Unlock 3 Reading, Writing and Critical Thinking, 2nd edition, by Carolyn Westbrook, Lida Baker, and Chris Sowton.
Text Book Description
Unlock Reading, Writing & Critical Thinking is a six-level, research-informed, academic-light English course created to build the skills and language students need for their studies. It develops students' ability to think critically in an academic context right from the start of their language learning. Every level has 100% new, inspiring videos on a range of academic topics. Critical Thinking sections develop the lower- and higher-order thinking skills required for the productive writing task, with measurable progress. Every unit is enhanced with fully integrated, bespoke Classroom App material to extend the skills and language students are learning in the book.
Course Description
ENG 102 academic reading and writing course provides a powerful introduction to a range of academic subjects by activating students' awareness of the topic and adding interest and authenticity to the lesson. The reading and writing are instructed and contextualized through focusing on a variety of texts. The course helps students develop the core transferable skills in critical thinking, reading and writing which they will practice in their university courses, regardless of their major studies.

Class Policies
- Attend all classes, be on time, and be ready to begin work
- Show respect to the instructor and other students
- Do not cause any disruption in class
- Turn off your cell phone
- Do not eat or drink in the classroom
- Speak only English in the classroom
- Bring your own textbooks, failure to do so may result in exclusion from the classroom
Attendance Policy
A student may withdraw from the program if he or she is absent for up to 25 percent of the course, provided he/she does so within the time permitted for withdrawal, which is during the first twelve weeks of the academic semester. If the absence exceeds 25 percent, a student will not be allowed to withdraw from the course and will not be permitted to attend lectures or sit the final examination and will receive a failing grade of 'F' on the course. The student shall be given at least one warning before being placed on the excluded list.
Assessment
Students must receive a minimum of 50% pass overall to go to the next level. The assessment is based on the following criteria:
