The BSc (Hons) Business Management and Media is a three-year bachelor's degree program offered at Lancaster University Leipzig.   • Develops skills in data analysis for business performance insights. Covers quantitative techniques for data collection, analysis, interpretation, and application to management problems. Includes using word processing and spreadsheet software. Involves a case study and report writing.
  • Principles of Marketing:
  • Examines marketing theory and practice, connecting it to business management. Covers market offerings (brands, products, services), the competitive marketplace, consumer engagement (including digital marketing), and information utilization for innovation and marketing planning. Develops critical thinking, analysis, and presentation skills.
  • Transformations: from Mass Media to Social Media:
  • Introduces old and new media, their interlinkages, and their role in contemporary society. Explores ideology, media representation (gender, race, class), and audience participation. Covers topics like platform infrastructure, news production, and media practices.
  • Employability and Careers:
  • A two-stage module (Michaelmas and Lent terms) focusing on self-awareness and opportunity awareness. Develops knowledge of the graduate labor market, effective job search strategies, personal and professional identity, and personal branding.

  • Combines theoretical and practical approaches to viral media, investigating its role in the digital landscape. Explores practical, ethical, and cultural aspects, linking viral theory to concepts like remix culture, produsage, spreadable media, and internet memes. Includes a team video project.
  • Media and Visual Culture:
  • Examines the role of images in contemporary culture, exploring vision, power, inequality, representation, and media technologies. Covers theories and practices related to vision, knowledge, the gaze, media representation, and identity.

Year Three Modules:

  • Social Media and Activism:
  • Investigates the use of social media in activist campaigns and social movements. Covers theories, concepts, and debates, and includes the practical production and evaluation of an online social media campaign.
  • Journalism and Multimedia Production:
  • Introduces the basics of journalism using digital technologies (audio, video, writing, photography, data). Covers journalism theories and practices, with a final journalistic product as assessment.
  • Games, Play and Media:
  • Combines theory and practice through co-designing a video game pitch and gamification of classroom activities. Covers theories of gamification, video games as hybrid media, playful media, meta-gaming, ludification, resistant play, and the politics of game design.
  • Independent Dissertation Project:
  • Students conduct independent research, choosing between a written dissertation (8000 words) or a media project dissertation (practical work and 4000-word critical reflection). Includes proposal submission and individual supervision.

Assessment:
