Degree Overview:
The Computer Science Foundation Year is designed for students who don't meet direct BSc entry requirements (English level, school qualifications) or want to build confidence and skills before their degree. It provides an introduction to the academic discipline of Computer Science, guaranteeing progression to BSc (Hons) Computer Science or BSc (Hons) Software Engineering (subject to meeting required criteria). The program can be completed in two or three semesters, depending on existing qualifications and English level. Successful completion leads to seamless progression to the first year of the chosen degree at Lancaster University Leipzig. The educational aims are to: develop fundamental knowledge and understanding of key disciplinary elements in Computer Science and related fields; consolidate transferable academic literacy, research, and analytical skills for undergraduate study; ensure students reach the required English language proficiency; prepare students for higher education; and develop graduate attributes for employability. Not all optional modules are available every year.

Assessment:
Assessment involves individual coursework (academic essays, research reports, in-class presentations), group project presentations (written and oral), and examinations. Independent study is encouraged to supplement learning, broaden knowledge, and develop subject-specific interests.
Teaching:
Teaching uses small-group lectures, seminars, individual and group coursework, and tutorials. All teaching is in English.
Other:
The Foundation Year is offered with intakes in January and October. The program is located in Leipzig, Germany, and taught in English. Upon successful completion of the Foundation in Computer Science, there are two progression options: BSc (Hons) Computer Science and BSc (Hons) Software Engineering.

Lancaster University Leipzig is a branch campus of Lancaster University in the UK, and the courses it provides are the same as those in the UK.
The campus is located in the city centre of Leipzig and welcomes German, EU and international students. The university offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, Foundation or Pre-Master’s entry.
Upon successful completion of one of the programmes, students who study in Leipzig receive their degrees from Lancaster University. It does not matter where a student studied – either at the Leipzig campus or at the main Bailrigg campus in the UK – students are awarded the same degree certificate issued by Lancaster University in the UK, which will enable students to apply to any postgraduate programme either in Germany, the UK or in any other country in the world.
