Program Overview

The Master's Degree in Translation, Interpreting, and Digital Communication at IULM prepares students for careers in interpreting, translation, and intercultural professions. The program offers three curricula: Conference Interpreting and New Technologies, Editorial and Media Translation (with dual degree options), and Digital and Intercultural Communication. The course is a 2-year program taught in Italian and is part of CIUTI and holds the EMT quality label.

Degree Overview:

The Master's Degree Course in Translation, interpreting and digital communication trains professional interpreters, translators, and experts in intercultural professions. The program aims to equip graduates with specialized skills for contemporary work across traditional and emerging sectors, including new technologies and digital/multimedia communication. To adapt to the evolving job market, the program offers three curricula: Conference Interpreting and new technologies, Editorial and Media Translation (with dual degree options), and Digital and Intercultural Communication. The course is part of CIUTI (Global Network of Excellence of University Institutes engaged in Translation and Interpreting) and holds the European Master's in Translation (EMT) quality label. It is a 2-year program, taught in Italian, and located in Milan. The program has 120 credits.

The program is structured around three curricula:

• Curriculum: Conference Interpreting and new technologies:
This curriculum focuses on various interpreting forms (simultaneous, consecutive, chuchotage, advanced dialogic), both in-person and remote. It combines interlingual and intercultural activities with training in digital tools, AI, and CAI (Computer Aided Interpreting) to prepare students for technologically advanced work scenarios.
• Curriculum: Editorial and Media Translation - dual degree:
This curriculum provides specialized knowledge in translation and post-editing, with a focus on editorial processes, multimedia, multimodal communication, audiovisual and web publishing. It includes training in computer-aided translation (AI and CAT tools) and collaborative translation. IULM offers dual degree paths with the Université de Haute Alsace and ISIT (Institut de management et de communication interculturels) in Paris for students in this curriculum.
• Curriculum: Digital and Intercultural Communication:
This curriculum offers specialized knowledge and skills in translation, interlanguage transfer processes, transmedia storytelling, visual communication, and digital design. It trains students in digital reference tools, computer and multimedia aids, and language transfer processes in storytelling and digital communication (translation, adaptation, content revision for web, visual communication design, curation of visual communication aspects and metadata, and implementation of digital projects).

The program aims to prepare graduates for careers as professional interpreters, translators, and experts in intercultural professions across various sectors, including those utilizing new technologies and digital/multimedia communication.

• Access to the course is through a selective knowledge test with a programmed number of places.
• The Editorial and Media Translation curriculum offers dual degree options with the Université de Haute-Alsace (UHA) in Mulhouse and ISIT (Institut de management et de communication interculturels) in Paris.
The UHA dual degree involves a semester of study in Mulhouse in the second year, with exemption from tuition fees at the partner university. Students must be proficient in French, Italian, and English. The ISIT dual degree also involves study abroad during the second year with tuition fee exemption and requires proficiency in French, Italian, and English. Both dual degrees result in a final examination before a board from both partner universities. The dual degree programs aim to provide students with an international scientific, cultural, and professional qualification.
