Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The MSc in Energy Systems program is offered by the School of Science & Technology of the University Center of International Programmes of Studies at the International Hellenic University. The program aims to provide postgraduate-level education to students and professionals seeking to expand their knowledge of energy issues from a technical perspective. This includes an emphasis on energy technology and usage, as well as the design, construction, and maintenance of energy production systems. The program recognizes the global importance of energy and its sustainability, and emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach, combining technical aspects with economics, management, and law-related knowledge. It's designed to be accessible to candidates from various academic backgrounds and has been in high demand since its inception in 2010. The program faculty includes leading academics from prestigious institutions in Greece and abroad, along with instructors from public authorities and key players in energy-related organizations. The program provides up-to-date technical knowledge and skills for energy management, designing energy-efficient systems and processes, utilizing renewable energy sources, and cost-effectively reducing and controlling pollution. A notable collaboration existed between the International Hellenic University and Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), funded by DAAD, offering common courses and exchange opportunities for students (2017-2019), including thesis work in Germany with all expenses covered. Courses are taught exclusively in English.

Outline:

The program is structured across three semesters. The first semester involves five mandatory core courses: Energy Systems Simulation and Modelling, Processes for Power and Energy Conversion, Project Finance, Project Management, and Quantitative Methods. The second semester includes three mandatory core courses: Alternative Fuels, Smart Cities, and Solar Power and Thermal Systems. Students also choose two elective courses (12 ECTS total) from a list including: Advanced Design of Energy Processes, Biofuels and their Assessment, Energy and Environmental Law, Energy Transmission and Storage, Environmental and Energy Policy, Environmental Hazard Management, Life Cycle Assessment, Modelling and Simulation of Building Integrated Solar Energy Systems, and Wind and Hydro Power Systems. However, the program culminates in a Master’s dissertation, which involves a supervised project allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge to a real-world energy challenge. Following submission, students present their dissertations to classmates and faculty. The text mentions that several past students have successfully published their dissertation work in peer-reviewed journals or presented it at international conferences, providing a list of examples.

Teaching:

The program's courses are taught exclusively in English. The academic staff comprises faculty members from universities in Greece and abroad, including collaborating instructors from various institutions (listed in the provided text). The program utilizes a recently established Energy Lab with facilities including a photovoltaic system, solar thermal system, PEM fuel cell, Stirling engine, organic Rankine cycle, wind tunnel, IR camera, and environmental meters for student use in studies and dissertation research.

Careers:

Graduates are expected to find employment in various roles within the energy sector, given the high demand for environmentally conscious energy specialists with technical and economic expertise. Potential career paths include senior technical positions in energy engineering, managerial positions in energy and utilities management, and roles in government policymaking. The university's Careers Office assists students in developing soft skills to enhance their job prospects. The program also prepares students for further research studies leading to PhD degrees.

Other:

The MSc in Energy Systems program is offered in a full-time (18 months) and part-time (30 months) mode. The part-time option is designed to accommodate students with work or other commitments. Lectures for the full-time program primarily occur on weekday evenings. A distance learning mode is also available. The program's location is at the School of Science & Technology facilities in Thermi-Thessaloniki.

The amount is payable in two instalments for the full time mode or in four instalments for the part time mode at the beginning of each semester. The fees are also eligible for financing through LAEK 0,45% – OAED programme.

  • For the 2024-25 academic year a tuition fee reduction of 1400€ (from the initial amount of 4000€) will be provided to all accepted students.
