Degree Overview:

The NCFE Level 2 Diploma in Photography is an OFQUAL-regulated qualification designed for individuals wanting to understand photographic processes and the photo imaging industry. It covers manipulating images and explores darkroom, studio, location, commercial, documentary, experimental, and alternative photographic processes. The course aims to: enable learners to understand different roles and employment opportunities in the photo imaging industry; understand health and safety in various environments; grasp legislation relevant to photographic practice (copyright, intellectual property, photographers' rights); be aware of legal and ethical considerations; develop essential employer-sought skills; understand photographic techniques and the photo imaging sector; and support learners' progression into creative industries (photography, art and design, craft, animation, moving image production).


Outline:

To achieve the Level 2 Certificate in Photography, learners must complete 3 mandatory units and 5 optional units.

  • Mandatory Units:
  • Develop and adapt photographic ideas.
  • Introduction to the photo imaging industry.
  • Optional Units (choose at least 5):
  • Studio photography.
  • Location photography.
  • Commercial photography.
  • Documentary photography.
  • Experimental and alternative process photography.
  • Presenting a portfolio of photographic images.
  • The course is delivered via a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) with access to case studies, learning materials, activities, presentations, and web links. Online tutor support and guidance are provided, including interaction with tutors, feedback on progress, and electronic submission of work. Face-to-face interaction occurs through video sessions. The course duration is 6 months, requiring a minimum of 5-6 hours of student study per week.

Assessment:

Assessment involves a mix of methods: portfolio of evidence and presentations.


Teaching:

The course is delivered via a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) with online tutor support and guidance. Face-to-face interaction is conducted through video sessions.


Careers:

The qualification supports progression into employment or self-employment, or advancement within employment in roles such as: photojournalism, marketing, wedding photography, interactive media design, photographer, studio photographer, location photographer, and documentary photography. Successful completion allows progression to NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Photography, NCFE Level 3 Diploma in Photography, or NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Art and Design.


Other:

After successful completion, students receive a Level 2 Diploma in Photography awarded by NCFE. The qualification is suitable for learners aged pre-16 and above. There are no specific entry requirements, although prior achievement of a Level 1 qualification in a similar area may be helpful. The total course fee is £300.00.
