Program Overview
The Hanze University of Applied Sciences offers a practical Power Electronics course designed for professionals with basic electronics knowledge. Through hands-on experiments and theory, participants gain a comprehensive understanding of power electronics applications in energy systems. The course emphasizes the latest developments in DC systems, speed controls, and renewable energy sources, enhancing industry professionals' skillset. The course is suitable for engineers, software engineers with an electronic background, and commercially technical employees seeking to enhance their knowledge in power electronics.
Program Outline
Degree Overview:
The Hanze University of Applied Sciences offers a Power Electronics course, described as a basic or refresher course for employees with foundational knowledge of (power) electronics. The objective is to teach participants the capabilities and limitations of modern power electronics. The course emphasizes the practical application of power electronics, driven by the increased use of DC systems, speed controls, and renewable energy sources within the Energy Transition. The course is designed to provide a practical understanding of power electronics through a combination of theory and hands-on experience.
Outline:
The Power Electronics course is a part-time program lasting 2 days. It consists of one day of theory and one day of practical work in the Energy Academy Europe using Lucas-Nülle setups. The practical component involves experiments to enhance understanding beyond theoretical learning. The course focuses on measuring characteristics and signal forms to grasp the applications of power electronics in various configurations. Specific topics covered include:
- Static and dynamic behavior of electronic components as switches
- Possible forms of energy conversion
- Behavior of passive components in power electronics
- Single-phase diode and thyristor bridges and three-phase diode bridges in combination with energy buffering
- Voltage conversion with buck and boost converters (practical only)
- Modulation methods for single and three-phase inverters
- EMC of power electronic circuits
Teaching:
The course is taught by specialized lecturers from the Electrical Energy Technology department at Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen. The teaching method is a blend of theoretical instruction and hands-on practical work in a laboratory setting. The practical sessions utilize Lucas-Nülle setups, allowing students to conduct experiments and gain a practical understanding of the concepts. The course material is available in Dutch and English, with the possibility of English or German instruction for specific company requests. A safety briefing and safety shoes are mandatory in the laboratory.
Other:
- The course requires an MBO4/HBO knowledge level and basic knowledge of and affinity with electronics. An electrotechnical basic education is not strictly necessary; practical experience is sufficient.
- The course is suitable for electrotechnical employees who have had basic training in (power) electronics or have gained practical experience. Examples include engineers, software engineers with an electronic background, and commercially technical employees.
- The course can be tailored for organizations, offering in-company training and customized programs.
- The course duration can be extended to 2 or 3 days (1 day theory, 1 or 2 days practical), with a total study load of 28 hours (8 hours theory, 8 hours practical, 12 hours self-study).
Entry Requirements:
MBO4/HBO level knowledge is required. A basic understanding of and affinity with electronics is important. An electrotechnical basic education is not necessary; knowledge can be gained through practical experience.
