Program Overview

The Bachelor of Engineering in Industrial Engineering – Mechanical Engineering Branch at Hochschule Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences combines technical expertise with business knowledge. Graduates become generalists who can optimize processes from both technical and economic perspectives, enabling them to excel in various professional fields in manufacturing, engineering services, and consulting. The program focuses on interdisciplinary collaboration, equipping students with a comprehensive understanding of business and technology.

Program Outline

The objective is to produce graduates who can solve technical problems using business expertise, think beyond departmental silos, and coordinate diverse interests. The program blends technical, natural scientific, mathematical, analytical, economic, and social-scientific content. Graduates are generalists with broad expert knowledge, capable of bridging different disciplines, ensuring smooth interdepartmental cooperation, and making competent managerial decisions. They can identify corporate interdependencies, optimize and coordinate plants, structures, and processes, and build synergies to overcome thinking barriers. The program positions graduates as the interface between economics and technology, understanding both design/production engineering and cost management/procurement. The first semesters focus on business administration fundamentals (investment calculation, financial reporting) and natural/technical sciences, along with mechanical engineering knowledge, applied through case studies and seminars. The language of instruction is mainly German.

Outline:

The program spans seven semesters.

  • Semesters 1–2: Mathematics and Computer Science; Fundamentals of Natural Sciences; Fundamentals of Engineering; Fundamentals of Business Administration; Project Work, Languages, Management.
  • Semesters 3–4: Statistics; Materials Technology; Strength of Materials; Investment Calculation and Cost Efficiency; Business Simulation; Controlling; Cutting and Chipless Manufacturing; Enterprise Resource Planning; Project Management and Problem Solving Methods; Procurement and Supply Chain Management; Scientific Computing; Control Engineering.
  • Semester 5: Internship Semester.
  • Semesters 6–7: Marketing and Sales; German Business Law; Factory Planning and Quality Management; Design Project: Designing and Manufacturing a Real Product; Compulsory Elective Modules; Bachelor’s Thesis; Colloquium.

Careers:

The program offers excellent career prospects, with high demand for industrial engineers, particularly in the Rhine-Ruhr area's manufacturing companies. These companies need generalists to optimize processes from technical and economic perspectives. Possible professional fields include:

  • Production management and optimization
  • Technical sales
  • Product management
  • Service engineering and management
  • Plant engineering
  • Logistics, supply chain management

Other:

The latest graduate statistics show high demand for industrial engineers. The program's broad syllabus helps graduates build synergies and overcome potential thinking barriers.
