Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The Communication & Multimedia Design (CMD) program at NHL Stenden Hogeschool is a four-year, full-time Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree. The program aims to equip students to become designers and multimedia specialists, regardless of their specific area of interest within multimedia (app development, games, graphic design, or virtual reality). The program emphasizes a hands-on approach, allowing students to build their portfolios through industry-set projects. Students develop both design skills and the learning skills necessary to master design concepts and tools. A personal study coach guides students in identifying and applying their skills, fostering a connection between skills, attitude, and industry impact. The program is accredited as Excellent by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO) and rated as a Top Programme by the Dutch Higher Education Guide. NHL Stenden offers a housing guarantee for first-year international students. The program focuses on developing students' individual design voices and understanding their positive impact on the world.

Teaching:

The CMD program utilizes a Design-Based Education approach. Students work on assignments from real companies throughout the four years, collaborating in small groups and receiving guidance from lecturers and industry professionals. This approach allows students to adapt their ideas based on feedback, enhancing flexibility, teamwork, and leadership skills. Students gain practical experience in researching clients' businesses, target groups, and the various design disciplines. The program also incorporates personal coaching to help students develop their skills and understand how to apply them effectively.

Careers:

The program prepares students for careers as designers and multimedia specialists. The hands-on experience gained through industry projects and internships provides a head start in their careers.

Other:

  • International Experience: The program offers opportunities for international experience through short advanced programs with RUN-EU partner institutions in Europe, study periods at NHL Stenden's Grand Tour locations (South Africa, Bali, or Thailand), exchanges with partner institutions, and a wide range of minors available worldwide.
  • Learning Environment: The program emphasizes working in mixed groups to leverage diverse perspectives.
  • The university aims to create a supportive and welcoming environment, described as "home away from home," where students are known by name and encouraged to be themselves. This is described as the "home of the originals" philosophy.
  • Program Ranking: The program is ranked in the top 3 of its kind according to Keuzegids Hbo 2025.
