Program Overview

The Rowan Experience

Our Master of Science in Civil & Environmental Engineering provides interdisciplinary coursework designed to increase the understanding and application of engineering principles. All of our program faculty possess expertise in transportation, geo-technology, structures, water resources, and the environment. Courses include applied, hands-on education, and build the knowledge and training needed for students to contribute to the engineering field.


Interdisciplinary areas include mechanics and materials, and sustainability. This specialization also includes the following focus areas: Mechanics and Materials; Signals, Systems and Computational Intelligence; Sustainability; and Transportation Engineering.


As a student, you can choose between a thesis track, and a coursework track. You may also work on a project, which may count toward a coursework track degree. Most full-time students work on funded research projects, leading to a thesis. Most part-time students select the coursework track. In order to be eligible for a Research Assistantship, students must select the thesis track.


Curriculum

The Rowan University Master of Science in Engineering program requires the completion of 30 semester hours (s.h.) and thesis research/engineering project. Between six and nine of the required semester hours can be Thesis Research/Engineering Project.

Admission Requirements

The following is a list of items required to begin the application process for the program. There may be additional actions or materials required for admission to the program. Upon receipt of the materials below, a representative from the Rowan Global Admissions Processing Office will contact you with confirmation or will indicate any missing items.

    • Eligible applicants must have successfully completed the following undergraduate foundation courses at an accredited institution prior to admission:
      • Physics I
      • Calculus I
      • Calculus II
      • Calculus II
      • Linear Algebra
      • Differential Equations
      • At least one of the following:
        • Physics II
        • Chemistry I
        • Probability & Statistics
  • $65 (U.S.) non-refundable application fee
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program OR Bachelor's degree in the Science or Mathematics disciplines from an accredited institution of higher learning (The graduate program advisor will assess the background of the applicant and evaluate their suitability for admission to the program)
  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended (regardless of number of credits earned)
  • Current professional resume
  • Typewritten statement of professional objectives
    • Provide reasons for pursuing the program. Describe how you might use this program to advance your career (educational goals beyond the master's level, if applicable, are also relevant).
  • Two letters of recommendation
    • Letters of recommendation should be from professional administrators and include information which attests to applicant's ability to pursue a graduate degree
  • Minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Optional Interview (If an interview is required, students will be contacted directly by the Faculty Admissions Committee regarding the interview. The interview can be in person or via telephone.)
  • The graduate program advisor may specify additional required undergraduate-level coursework to supplement the applicant's background before taking any graduate courses.

Career Outlook

If you are interested in advancing your career as a civil engineer, urban or regional planner, construction manager, or environmental engineer, earning your master's degree at Rowan can put you on the right track. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects employment for civil engineers to grow six percent from 2018 to 2028. In fact, the tri-state area (New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York) has among the highest employment rates for civil engineers in the country (more than 35,000 employed).
