About Program

Program Overview

Module - Acute Care: Contemporary Issues (Level 7)

Overview

This module aims to provide a flexible, student-centred approach to explore contemporary issues underpinning the development of specialist competencies to meet the needs of the acutely ill adult, independent of clinical setting, including those recovering from critical illness, stepping down from critical care areas to ward based or within a community-based or pre-hospital setting.

Learning Outcomes

  • The learning contract is developed between you and the module lead to address your specific learning needs and underpin the chosen competencies for work-based assessment.
  • To meet the learning outcomes, your self-directed study will include the relative theories, evidence base, guidelines and health care policy which relate to the therapeutic interventions and consider the factors involved in promoting a multi-disciplinary approach to meet the physical and psychosocial needs of this patient group within your care setting.

Teaching & Assessment

How you will learn

  • The module lead will provide regular, flexible, student-led 1:1 tutorials to offer support and advice in the completion of the learning contract.
  • You will develop your reflective ability to determine how learning from this module has transformed your understanding of your practice.
  • Whilst learning is self-directed, the module lead will provide resources within the modular blackboard site which, although not exhaustive, will support the topics chosen within your learning contract.

How you will be assessed

  • Your formative assessment is a provisional learning contract which will include a plan for the ongoing development of knowledge and competence.
  • The plan will include a rationale for your chosen competency framework supporting your clinical skills and knowledge in the acute practice setting.
  • Your summative assessment is a 3,500 word portfolio, including the completion of your work-based competencies, to meet the learning outcomes identified within your learning contract and the overall learning outcomes for the module.

Entry Requirements

  • Working in an adult critical care in-patient environment, supported by and nominated for the Critical and or Acute Care 60 credit UAD/PG Cert programme by a practice-based assessor.
  • Student must have completed the step 1 competencies, have at least 12 months experience in critical care nursing and have completed HCPD 6/7097 Core Assessment and Monitoring of the critically ill adult. (National Competency Framework for Registered Nurses in Adult Critical Care).
