Program Overview
Module - Advanced Pathophysiology and Disease in Practice
Overview
This module runs as a series of 5 online sessions/activities, with no synchronous/face-to-face activities, allowing students to fit their studies around their own schedule. Students will undertake a literature review, selecting an area of study (a particular condition) to focus on, reading in-depth around the topic, and developing their understanding of it.
Objectives
- Explore how most conditions/diseases have at their point of onset one or two of a limited number of possible malfunctions (alterations in homeostatic balance at cellular level) the downstream effects of which manifest themselves in tissue/organ and systemic malfunctions which we recognise by their associated signs and symptoms.
- Equip students with a toolbox of transferable understanding which will allow them to better understand conditions and diseases that they are unfamiliar with and the rationale for intervention/treatment.
- Students will do lots of reading, and lots of learning, with the module leader supporting them in the choice of topic and helping plan what to include (and, importantly, what not to include) in the review.
What You Will Learn
That depends on the condition chosen. The best options are those that will give you understanding of processes that can be transferred to other conditions. For example, most conditions have an immunological element to them, so picking a condition such as asthma, COPD, or RA (there are hundreds to choose from that are suitable) will give you a detailed understanding of immune events that will help understand other conditions (and the rationale for their treatment/management). Although you won’t cover normal physiology in your review (your focus will all be on the abnormal events) you will learn a lot about the system in which your condition is “situated”, along with various aspects of other systems that might be impacted.
Modules
The topics covered in this module include:
- The cell cycle and malignant disease
- Aspects of immune functioning, including autoimmunity
- The functioning and manipulation of events at the synapse
- Stress and the HPA axis
- A brief dip into respiratory (COPD) and cardiac (heart failure) functioning
Teaching & Assessment
How You Will Learn
It is largely self-directed in terms of the actual learning. The module leader is available from the start of the module, and you will have individual contact from the outset – discussing the topic, refining your searches, and getting the approach within your review that is likely to most effectively reward you for the efforts you put in.
How You Will Be Assessed
A 1000-word formative assignment submitted at the end of week 7 will form the first part of your review, submitted though Turnitin. You will get detailed audio and written feedback on that, which you will apply. You will then pick up where you left off, continuing through to the end of module submission of the finished 3500-word review, that accounts for 100% of the module mark.
Entry Requirements
Students would benefit from having previously studied physiology. To be eligible to study this module, students must demonstrate the ability to study at this level and commit to attempting the assessment.

Tuition Fees Policy
Tuition fees are set annually and are subject to review each year. The University may therefore raise tuition fees in the second or subsequent years of a course, in line with inflation and/or the maximum permitted by law or government policy. Students will be notified of any changes as soon as possible.
