Course Overview

This programme will introduce learners to standard project management terminology before moving into more technical aspects of project management associated with establishing the baseline (time, cost and scope) and then monitoring progress. The course takes a particular focus on financial aspects of project management including the initial cost / benefit analysis and then tracking of actual costs against those forecast.

Course Structure

What you will learn

Students will learn industry standard terminology and skills associated with project management. There is a particular emphasis on technical and financial skills development to enable a sound baseline schedule to be developed which can then be tracked as work is underway.


Year one

There are three modules on the programme, each delivered over a 6-7 week period in day release mode.


  • Principles of Project Management
  • Project Planning and Resource management
  • Project Finance Management

Teaching & Assessment

How you will learn

Learning takes place in tutor-led sessions where formal delivery of theory is punctuated with individual or group activities that are used to develop understanding and reinforce learning. All of the learning materials are available online in the University's virtual learning environment which enables learners to read-ahead or re-visit topics as needed.


How you will be assessed

Assessment takes place in a range of ways including written work and online tests. The tests will be used to check understanding and also your ability to apply the principles being taught to real examples and scenarios.

There will be some additional costs associated with the course including stationery, textbooks, field trips and membership fees although some of these features are optional.
