Mapping Environmental Assets

This module, developed in partnership with Land App, will develop your skills and knowledge to produce a multi-layered digital map of public goods for an upland farm, moorland area or nature reserve.

Course Structure

What you will learn

  • An introduction to key concepts such as biodiversity, public goods; and their significance
  • Collecting and using data: public data sets, primary data, introduction to geographical information systems
  • Creating a layered map of public goods for farms and moorland
  • Biodiversity and habitat baseline assessment and monitoring techniques
  • Extracting publicly available data sets and ground-truthing
  • Use of Land App and other related geographical information systems

Teaching & Assessment

How you will learn

  • Tutor-led sessions will be a mix of in-person at our Ambleside campus and nearby upland sites plus online live sessions
  • Teaching and learning activities will include tutor presentations, small group discussions, supported digital skills workshops, farm tours and practical fieldwork activities

How you will be assessed

  • Your learning will be assessed through completion of a realistic set task which allows you to demonstrate the core skills and knowledge from the course
  • The set task includes creating a layered digital map of environmental assets accompanied by a short explanatory written summary
  • The course is graded pass/fail with a pass being awarded upon attendance of the course and completion of the set task to an acceptable standard

Qualifications

Entry Requirements

  • GCSEs: English and Mathematics Level 2 GCSE Grade C/4
  • Other experience: equivalent competency through experience
