Program Overview

Module - Negotiated Learning (Level 6)

The Negotiated Learning module is an independent learning module explicitly designed to meet the needs of learners who are already working in a wide range of practice situations. This module requires students to undertake a literature review based on a topic of interest and also a reflection on the impact of the review on their practice. At the start of the module, a proposal detailing the intended topic for review, as well as your personal aims for the review, is submitted into Turnitin for approval by the module lead. Once approved, a supervisor is allocated to provide support with the study.

The module is set up to develop students’ ability to independently manage their studies with the support of a designated supervisor. Students are afforded a total of 5 hours of contact time with their supervisors. Students will not only develop skills that will enable them to search for and assess literature relevant to their practice, but also skills that will develop them into reflective practitioners capable of making the link between theory to practice.

Objectives

  • Develop skills that allow you to search for relevant literature that will ensure evidence-based practice.
  • Critically engage with relevant literature and reflect on the impact of literature on your professional practice.
  • Study independently, and manage your time effectively.
  • You will NOT be carrying out a primary research as ethical clearance will be needed.

Course Structure

What you will learn

The module will enhance the following:

  • Develop the search skills needed to gather relevant and up-to-date information.
  • Engage thoroughly with relevant literature.
  • Critical reflection for practice.
  • Make links between theory and practice.

Teaching & Assessment

How you will learn

As this is an independent study module, you are given a total of 5 hours of contact time with your designated supervisor/module lead. You will carry out a search for literature relevant to your topic and undertake a review of the literature. There is only one final (summative) task in this module and you will be supported by a supervisor. Note that it is your responsibility to contact your supervisor to arrange support sessions.

As well as meeting the module learning outcomes, you must ensure that your submitted assignment addresses the focus of the chosen topic as well as your intended aims of the literature review. As such, you need to ensure that in the proposal, the topic of interest is clear and unambiguous and the aims of the literature review are also clearly stated.

How you will be assessed

The assessment will be a 3000-word essay. Students who may wish to present their work in a different format (PowerPoint or posters) will need to seek approval from the module lead and obtain guidance from their supervisor.
