Skills Bootcamp in Project Management

Course Overview

Project Management skills are in high demand across all sectors. This course introduces project management processes, tools and techniques and gives you the opportunity to try these out in your current workplace. You will learn about managing a project from inception to closedown, including planning and scheduling, quality management, budgeting and estimating, and working with stakeholders.

Course Structure

What You Will Learn

The course includes a series of one-day taught workshops over 13 weeks focusing on different aspects of project management, and a relevant work-based project. Workshop sessions will cover:


Compulsory Modules
  • Project Management and the Project Lifecycle
  • Project governance and the project context
  • Project requirements and scope development
  • Assuring quality
  • Planning project delivery and creating schedules
  • Costing, budgeting, and estimating
  • Stakeholder engagement and management, communication, negotiation and conflict
  • PM in Context; Change control & configuration, Working, leading and delivering through teams and effective leadership
  • Closing a project and handover

You will also undertake a project in your workplace enabling you to apply your learning to a real situation. You will identify a potential project with benefits to your organisation and agree with the management on how to initiate, plan and execute it. Followed by a presentation on the project undertaken during the programme. This project could include initiatives such as:


  • Researching the market for a new product or service idea
  • Improving a business or production process
  • Rebranding a product or service
  • Planning an Arts event
  • Arranging a visitor event in Cumbria

Association for Project Management Project Management Fundamentals Qualification (APM PFQ) At the end of the Bootcamp learners will attend a revision workshop to prepare for the APM Project Fundamentals Qualification (APM PFQ) exam to be taken upon completion of the Bootcamp


Teaching & Assessment

How You Will Learn

The Skills Bootcamp in Project Management is delivered online allowing participants from all over Cumbria to join without having to travel.


The full day workshop sessions include a mixture of tutor input, use of learning materials (videos, podcasts etc.), group and individual exercises and formative assessment activities.


You will be supported to complete your work-based project with suggested templates and exercises to guide you.


How You Will Be Assessed

Learners will complete two informal assessments during the programme:


  • A “mini-PFQ” assessment in the style of the Association for Project Management (APM) Project Fundamentals Qualification, testing knowledge of project management principles
  • A 5-10min presentation on the project undertaken during the programme

At the end of the Bootcamp learners will attend a revision workshop to prepare for the Association for Project Management (APM) Project Fundamentals Qualification exam, taken in week 13.


Fees & Funding

Tuition Fees

2025 - 2026

Tuition fees are set annually and are subject to review each year. The University may therefore raise tuition fees in the second or subsequent years of a course, in line with inflation and/or the maximum permitted by law or Government policy. Students will be notified of any changes as soon as possible.


Funding

The full price for the programme is £3200. The programme is funded by the Department for Education (DfE) Skills for Life scheme, with employers making a contribution towards the fees. For SMEs, this is £320; for employers with over 250 staff, this is £960. Contributions are payable on enrolment, via our online store. A payment link will be provided on enrolment.


Application

  • Please contact for information on course dates, fees and applying. You will then need to complete an application form, providing details of your employer who has agreed to fund the contribution. We will assess your application for eligibility and if you meet the requirements and there is space on the course, we will offer you a place.
  • We will contact your employer to obtain confirmation of their support. If they do not confirm their support, our offer to you may be withdrawn
  • If you do not meet the requirements, or there is not space in the course, we will contact you to advise on possible actions.
  • At our discretion, applications received after an advertised closing date and before the start of the course may be accepted. Applications will not be accepted once the course is in progress.
  • In the event that a participant is unable to accept an offer, no substitutions can be accepted for that participant. Another employee may submit a new application in their own right.
  • In the event that a participant has enrolled and started the course, no substitutions can be accepted for that participant. No refund can be given for the employer contribution.
