About Program
Program Overview
Master of Arts in Photography
The Master of Arts in Photography at LABA Valencia aims to explore contemporary practices and the creative possibilities of photography, with a particular focus on fashion and editorial. The Master allows students to learn about trends in fashion, culture, editorial, photojournalism, and art by working in collaboration with globally prestigious publishers and agencies.
Programme
1st four-month period
- Photographic Situations: Develop a deeper understanding of fashion and editorial audiences. Examine key moments in history when fashion and editorial photography converge, marking a before and after in social movements.
- Collaborative Community Project: Work on a briefing in relation to a community, around and with which students will carry out their photographic proposal.
- Objects, spaces and boundaries: Investigate the interstices of photography, the object, and the new boundaries currently associated with art direction, combining fashion, art, and technology in visually attractive narratives.
2nd four-month period
- Final Major Project: Research & Planning: Develop the theoretical, methodological, and experimental corpus for the final project. Undertake a body of research-based work on a creative project, demonstrating a critical awareness of current developments and trends in the area of practice.
- Collaborative social challenge project: Explore the boundaries of personal, social, and cultural identity through photography. Develop an inter-disciplinary response to a generated brief by addressing and engaging with a social challenge.
- Research Methods: Teach students a corpus of research methods, providing them with the theoretical, conceptual, and practical tools needed to carry out a research project.
3rd four-month period
- Collaborative Enterprise Project: Develop a complete production to respond to a commission generated by one of the most important publishers in contemporary fashion. Develop knowledge and practical skills in carrying out the magazine's professional commission.
- Photography and Publics: Reflect on and define personal positioning within the many areas and fields of fashion editorial photography, analyzing how fashion editorial photography has spread into the fields of portraiture, film, reportage, and music.
- Final Major Project: Production & Sharing: Complete an independent research paper that is informed by the wider contexts of the discipline, coherent and of a standard appropriate to a master's degree.
