Program Overview


Legal English 20-30

This Legal English course is for lawyers aged 20-30 and covers a range of legal topics with a focus on contract drafting, legal case studies, negotiations and participation in meetings. You will develop the skills and gain the confidence you need to become an effective communicator in a legal setting. You will also cover the general language skills to help you to interact confidently in a wide range of formal and informal situations.


Who is it for?

This course is designed for newly qualified lawyers and law students aged 20-30. Typically, course participants need to develop their speaking and writing skills to help them communicate complex legal ideas and concepts to partners, clients and colleagues in a variety of formal and less formal situations including meetings, negotiations, and networking events.

Course content

This legal English course focuses on developing your English skills in a legal setting, and the vocabulary of criminal law, civil law, contract law, and commercial law. Areas of focus include:


  • Spoken fluency – case studies, legal process, negotiations
  • Legal vocabulary – relating to commercial law, contracts, describing legal concepts
  • Grammar development
  • Listening practice and comprehension
  • Communication skills – discussions, negotiations, conflict resolution, dealing with difficult situations
  • Teleconferencing and Spoken communication
  • Contract drafting techniques
  • Networking English – hospitality, travelling, inviting, advising, apologising.
  • Visits to the law courts such at The Royal Courts of Justice or the Old Bailey when possible

English Level

  • Level 1 (Beginner): I do not speak any English.
  • Level 2 (Elementary): I can say and understand a few things in English.
  • Level 3 (Pre-Intermediate): I can communicate simply and understand in familiar situations but only with some difficulty.
  • Level 4 (Low Intermediate): I can make simple sentences and can understand the main points of a conversation but need much more vocabulary.
  • Level 5 (Intermediate): I can speak and understand reasonably well and can use basic tenses but have problems with more complex grammar and vocabulary.
  • Level 6 (Upper Intermediate): I speak and understand well but still make mistakes and fail to make myself understood occasionally.
  • Level 7 (Pre-Advanced): I speak and understand well but still make mistakes and fail to make myself understood occasionally.
  • Level 8 (Advanced): I speak and understand very well but sometimes have problems with unfamiliar situations and vocabulary.
  • Level 9 (Very Advanced): I speak and understand English completely fluently.
