Overview
Phlebotomists work directly with other health-care providers and patients, and in laboratory settings. You will collect blood from patients, manage and handle specimens, and perform associated data entry. It's a job that requires good people and communication skills, attention to detail, a professional yet caring attitude, and a commitment to teamwork and excellence.

Length and Location Notes
The theory components of your program are delivered by online distance learning, which enables you to learn and study from home. You will be required to attend on-campus laboratories in Saskatoon on designated dates (students will be notified of dates in advance). The clinical experience can be offered at various designated sites around the province.

Your Career
As a phlebotomist, you will be employed by medical laboratories to perform blood collection and specimen management and handling, which includes the associated data entry. The provincial health regions have identified an ongoing need for workplace-ready phlebotomists. Look for job opportunities with regional health districts, government health agencies, and private labs.

Part-time Delivery
Part-time students may take the following available courses prior to admission, but must apply and be accepted to the program thereafter, in order to graduate and receive a credential: INFC 180, and MTER 180. Note: Generally, all courses required for a program must be completed within a specific timeline, to ensure program currency and relevancy. The timeline is four (4) years for a certificate.
Admissions
Admission Requirements
- Grade 12 with an overall average of 60% with English Language Arts A30, English Language Arts B30, Foundations of Math 20 or Foundations of Math 30 or Pre-Calculus 30, Health Science 20 or Biology 30, and Physical Science 20 or Chemistry 30*
- Minimum 25 net words per minute keyboarding speed with 90% accuracy (5-minute testing report to be submitted with transcripts)

Alternative Admission
Applicants who do not possess the academic qualifications for a program may be admitted if evidence of probable success can be established through an alternative admission assessment. Applicants are automatically considered for alternative admission. However, some specific admission requirements may still need to be met.
Tuition and Fees

Additional program costs that students are responsible for include:
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search: approx. $75
- Immunizations: no cost if immunizations are completed with Sask Polytech health nurse, completed outside of Saskatchewan Polytechnic range from $90 to $120 for Hepatitis B series
- Mask FIT Testing - two sizes: N95 - approx. $75 to $125
- WHMIS 2015 - Globally Harmonized System (GHS) certification: Approx. $35
- Transferring Lifting Repositioning (TLR) Object Moving certification: Students should enroll into a course a minimum of 1-2 months prior to program start date as courses fill up quickly, Phlebotomy only require Object Moving TLR – (course code to register into is SPCR-1002), Approx. $95
- Students will be required to purchase or routinely have access to a laptop or desktop computer for coursework. Associated expenses are the students' responsibility.
- Students are responsible for all travel/parking/accommodation costs associated with their on-campus labs and clinical experience.
