Overview

This double degree will augment your knowledge in geology, which is critical to the global economy, with knowledge of the resources industry and finance.


What You'll Learn

  • Apply fundamental geological and financial principles and concepts in theoretical, practical and financial market situations
  • Solve resource exploration, environmental, sustainability and capital market problems through creative thinking and the extrapolation, interpolation and analysis of geoscience and financial information
  • Collate, synthesise, and visualise geoscientific and empirical data sets and conceptual information using digital technologies, and communicate this information to industry and community stakeholders concisely and accurately using written, visual, and verbal means appropriate to the situation
  • Recognise the finite nature of Earth resources, and the need to manage and mitigate social, environmental and financial impacts of resource exploration and extraction and geohazards
  • Recognise and value environmental, indigenous and other community perspectives and acknowledge the need for sustainable use of earth resources in geological activities and in a commercial context
  • Work ethically and professionally, complying with applicable legislation and managing time and other resources efficiently and effectively; developing employability and leadership skills valued by industry, government and community

Admission Criteria

Work and Life Experience

  • You have left secondary education more than two years ago (i.e., who are not classified as recent secondary education applicants) and have not undertaken vocational education training (VET) or higher education study since then
  • 'Experience' includes a combination of factors sufficient to demonstrate readiness for higher education such as mature-age entry, professional experience whether completion of the Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) is required or not, community involvement or work experience
  • Applicants may have undertaken non-formal programs that have helped prepare them for tertiary education or are relevant to the proposed higher education field of study

  • STAT entry
    • The Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) is a national test for those who don't meet university admission criteria
    • STAT can be used to meet entry criteria for some courses, or as a way to satisfy Curtin’s English proficiency requirements
    • STAT elements considered are Written English, Multiple Choice Verbal and Quantitative

TAFE or Apprenticeship

  • Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study are those whose highest level of study since leaving secondary education is a VET course
  • This includes study at a public TAFE or other VET provider, whether a qualification was completed or not
  • Applicants with VET study may have other qualifications such as a Year 10 or Year 12 secondary school certificate

    • To meet the entry criteria with VET studies you need to have:
      1. AQF Certificate IV – Separate evidence of English language proficiency is required
      2. AQF Diploma
      3. AQF Advanced Diploma
    • Met the subject prerequisites
    • Note: prerequisites can be met via specific modules completed within the Advanced Diploma/Diploma or by ATAR subjects (or equivalent)

Current or Previous University Experience

  • Applicants with higher education are those whose highest level of study since leaving secondary education is a higher education course, such as a university degree
  • This may include applicants who are currently studying a higher education course at another education provider and want to transfer to Curtin University, or applicants who are currently studying at Curtin but want to switch to a different course
  • It may also include applicants who have completed past study with university and non-university higher education providers

Curtin Course Switcher Criteria

  • To switch into this course, you need to have:
    1. Met the admission criteria for minimum entry
    2. Completed Mathematics Applications ATAR (or equivalent)
  • Prerequisite Information
    • The Mathematics Applications ATAR can be met with one of the following Curtin units:
      • MATH1013 Introductory Mathematics
      • MATH1014 Foundations of Calculus
      • MATH1015 Linear Algebra

Fees and Scholarships

Australian and New Zealand Student Indicative Fees

  • 2025 Fee year: $12,600*
  • Commonwealth supported
    • A CSP is subsidised by the Australian Government
    • They pay part of the course fees directly to Curtin and then the student pays the remainder (referred to as the “student contribution amount”)
    • The student can defer this fee to their HECS-HELP loan
  • Fees are indicative first year only and are subject to passage of legislation
  • *The indicative first-year fee is calculated on 200 credit points, which is the typical full-time study load per year, however some courses require additional study to be completed, in which case the fee will be higher than that shown
