Coastal and Marine Science

Undergraduate double degree major

This Double Degree Major provides students with the knowledge and practical skills to plan and manage human activities while conserving the coastal environment.


Overview

Students in this course gain a practical experience through a range of field-based experiences in marine environments.


This course sits within the double degree combination of Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts, and also the Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Commerce. Applicants have the choice of which double degree combination they would like to study.

What you'll learn

  • Apply principles and practices of environmental and biological science to the planning and sustainable management of coastal zones
  • Apply problem solving, critical thinking and decision making skills to the challenges facing coastal zones under increasing anthropogenic pressures and the adverse effects of climate change
  • Locate, extract and interpret relevant evidence and scientific literature to inform decision making relevant to the planning and management of the coastal zone
  • Demonstrate the use of written, oral and interpersonal communication skills appropriate to the conduct of a professional engaged in the management of coastal zones in the Australasian region
  • Use appropriate technologies and their applications to generate information to inform decision makers involved with resource management, biodiversity monitoring and mapping of the coastal zone, with emphasis on the marine environment
  • Apply skills in critical analysis and interpretation of the published literature to the development of lifelong learning skills in environmental management and the science underpinning decision making in the coastal zone. Sustain intellectual curiosity about the environment and humankind's role within it
  • Recognise the national and global imperatives driving coastal changes to biological, chemical and physical systems. Integrate international case studies and experiences in the application of knowledge to coastal decision making
  • Respect individual human rights and other cultures, particularly as they relate to the range of practices historically and currently employed within the coastal zone in other parts of the world
  • Demonstrate professional and ethical practice appropriate to engagement with organisations and individuals involved in all aspects of environmental and coastal zone management, both in a multi disciplinary team environment and as independent stakeholders

You’re considered someone with work and life experience if:

You have left secondary education more than two years ago (i.e. who are not classified as recent secondary education applicants) and have not undertaken vocational education training (VET) or higher education study since then.


How we define ‘experience’

‘Experience’ includes a combination of factors sufficient to demonstrate readiness for higher education such as mature-age entry, professional experience whether completion of the Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) is required or not, community involvement or work experience. Applicants may have undertaken non-formal programs that have helped prepare them for tertiary education or are relevant to the proposed higher education field of study.

The Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) is a national test for those who don't meet university admission criteria. STAT can be used to meet entry criteria for some courses, or as a way to satisfy Curtin’s English proficiency requirements.

STAT is not accepted as an entry pathway, but may be used to demonstrate English language proficiency.

You’re considered someone who studied at TAFE or have done an apprenticeship if:

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study are those whose highest level of study since leaving secondary education is a VET course. This includes study at a public TAFE or other VET provider, whether a qualification was completed or not. Applicants with VET study may have other qualifications such as a Year 10 or Year 12 secondary school certificate.


Pathways

  • TAFE entry

To meet the entry criteria with VET studies you need to have:

  1. AQF Certificate IV – Separate evidence of English language proficiency is required
  2. AQF Diploma
  3. AQF Advanced Diploma
    • Met ATAR Mathematics Applications prerequisite (or equivalent).
  • STAT entry

Applicants with higher education are those whose highest level of study since leaving secondary education is a higher education course, such as a university degree. This may include applicants who are currently studying a higher education course at another education provider and want to transfer to Curtin University, or applicants who are currently studying at Curtin but want to switch to a different course. It may also include applicants who have completed past study with university and non-university higher education providers.


Curtin course switcher criteria

To switch into this course, you need to have:


  1. Met the admission criteria for minimum entry
  2. Met the ATAR Mathematics Applications prerequisite (or equivalent).

Prerequisite Information

The ATAR Mathematics Applications can be met with one of the following Curtin units:


  • MATH1013 Introductory Mathematics
  • MATH1014 Foundations of Calculus
  • MATH1015 Linear Algebra

Higher education course switcher criteria

Our admission criteria for minimum entry apply to those who are switching courses from another higher education course provider.


In addition, you need to have:


  1. Met the Mathematics Applications ATAR prerequisite (or equivalent).
