About Program

Program Overview

Bachelor of Applied Geology

Overview

The Bachelor of Applied Geology is a three-year full-time or equivalent part-time study course that provides students with a thorough grounding in theoretical geology, emphasizing mineral, energy, and groundwater resources and their environmental management. The course is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to work in the minerals and energy industries, as well as in environmental and sustainability roles.

Course Structure

The course is divided into three years, with the first year focusing on foundational subjects such as geology, chemistry, mathematics, scientific communication, and computer skills. The second year builds on these foundations, introducing theoretical, laboratory, and field skills required to understand geological processes. In the final year, students can choose to specialize in either the Applied Geology stream or the Mining Geology stream.

Applied Geology Stream

The Applied Geology stream covers the breadth of Earth history investigation and applied geosciences, including environmental geosciences, groundwater resources, and sustainable management of mineral and energy exploration and extraction.

Mining Geology Stream

The Mining Geology stream combines studies of resource and field geology with mining systems, resource estimation, and process mineralogy. The final year of study is undertaken at Curtin Kalgoorlie.

Double Degrees

Students can also extend their expertise and career opportunities by studying Applied Geology as a double degree with Environmental Biology or Finance.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Geology can pursue careers in various industries, including:

  • Environmental geology
  • Carbon and hydrogen storage
  • Groundwater extraction
  • Resources exploration
  • Mining
  • Natural hazards and risk analysis
  • Research and development

Professional Recognition and Accreditation

Graduates are eligible for membership of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the Australian Institute of Geoscientists, and/or the Geological Society of Australia.
