Program Overview

Undergraduate Certificate in Health Sciences

Overview

Access to healthcare is a fundamental human right. Regardless of our age, gender or socio-economic status, good physical and mental health is our most essential asset.

In this course, you’ll learn how healthcare fits within culture and society, exploring perspectives on wellbeing, illness and disability.

You’ll gain foundational insights into ethical decision-making, and safety and quality in client-centred care. You’ll also gain knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, as well as an understanding of the role empirical evidence plays in decision-making in health practice.

This course is a great way to explore a career in health sciences. And because you’ll study part-time, and with a choice of online or on-campus study, you’ll be able to fit your study around your lifestyle.

After completing this course, you’ll qualify for entry into our Bachelor of Science (Health Sciences). You’ll also be eligible for credit for the four units completed, which will reduce the overall duration of the degree course.

What you'll learn

  • apply principles and concepts of health in a variety of contexts relevant to further learning and/or paraprofessional work
  • apply critical and creative thinking and problem solving skills relevant to health sciences to generate innovative solutions to problems
  • use technology appropriately to communicate effectively with patients, carers and other health care professionals
  • consider global perspectives on health and international health standards
  • demonstrate respect for Indigenous values, cultures and knowledges and consider Indigenous perspectives on health
  • work professionally in teams and independently, and demonstrate life-long learning skills

Commonwealth supported

What is a Commonwealth supported place (CSP)?

A CSP is subsidised by the Australian Government. They pay part of the course fees directly to Curtin and then the student pays the remainder (referred to as the “student contribution amount”). The student can defer this fee to their HECS-HELP loan.

All Australian students studying an undergraduate degree are automatically awarded a Commonwealth supported place. A limited number of Commonwealth supported places are also available for some postgraduate courses.

Learn more about CSPs and whether you’re eligible by visiting the Australian Government’s StudyAssist website.

Fees are indicative first year only and are subject to passage of legislation.

*The indicative first-year fee is calculated on 200 credit points, which is the typical full-time study load per year, however some courses require additional study to be completed, in which case the fee will be higher than that shown.

This fee is a guide only. It may vary depending on the units you choose and does not include incidental fees (such as lab coats or art supplies) or the cost of your textbooks – visit other fees and charges for more information.

For more information on fees and to determine your eligibility for HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP, please visit fee basics or the Study Assist website

To be eligible for the Commonwealth supported fee:

  • Australian citizens must complete some of their course of study while residing in Australia.
  • Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens must be residing in Australia for the entire course.

For further information on eligibility please refer to the Australian Government Study Assist website.

If you’re not an Australian citizen, permanent resident or New Zealand citizen, please see information for international students.
