Antipsychotics Essentials
Course Overview
This training benefits all health professionals (registered nurses, social workers, psychologists, student nurses, nurse prescribers, nursing associates, and health care support workers) involved in providing care for people with mental illness taking antipsychotic medication.
About Your Course
This study day aims to develop your knowledge and skills in providing safe care and clinical management of mental health service users taking antipsychotic medications. Particularly for staff who experience client contact and who are looking to enhance their practice, specifically those with a limited knowledge of how medications used in the treatment and management of psychosis, schizophrenia work (including clinical benefits and side effects).
Learning Objectives
By the end of the session, you should be able to:
- Describe neuronal physiology, neurotransmission, and relevance to symptomatology of psychosis
- Discuss biochemical theories posted in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia
- Discuss pharmacotherapeutics of antipsychotic drugs and relevance in the treatment and management of psychosis
- Outline indications for use of Antipsychotics
- Outline and discuss side effects and management
- Discuss best practice regarding medication and physical health management
Learning and Teaching
This course is taught via synchronous online delivery using a web-based learning and teaching platform (e.g. MS teams, Kaltura new row, Adobe Connect, Zoom).
The content on the day will be delivered via a mixture of PowerPoint presentation, small group exercise and discussions, group feedback and recap/quiz.
