Applied Clinical Physiology in Children and Young People
Course Overview
This module aims to develop and apply the foundations of medical sciences to describe and explain normal, altered and extremes of physiological states enabling the interpretation of clinical findings signifying disease and/or illness in children and young people.
Programme Options
This module can be taken as part of the PGCert Paediatric Enhanced Clinical Practice (Specialism) or the Advanced Clinical Practice (Paediatrics and Child Health). It is not available as a standalone module.
Teaching
Active learning will allow students to learn via collaboration, cooperation, and peer-based learning. Activities may include interactive lectures, clinical skills demonstration and supervised practice, small group activities, case-based discussions, workshops and tutorials.
Synchronous and asynchronous learning and teaching activities are delivered via a combination of study days and digital strategies at local sites or online using the MyLearning.
Assessment
Formative assessment will be:
- Weekly quizzes
- Cases from practice
For the summative assessment, learners will:
- Present a case-based discussion
Teaching Dates
Teaching will take place over a whole day. Face-to-Face teaching will take place either on or around the Great Ormond Street Hospital campus or at the Middlesex University West Stand at StoneX stadium. Exact locations for teaching days will be advised closer to the start date.
Learners are only expected to attend one of the available assessment dates.

Entry Requirements
To undertake this module, you must:
- Starting or continuing the PGCert Paediatric Enhanced Practice (Specialism) or Advanced Clinical Practice (Paediatrics and Child Health) MSc. You can view the entry requirements for these programmes on the respective webpages.
- You will need a designated Educational Supervisor to supervise and support the overall educational and clinical development and facilitate completion of specified work-based learning activities and assessments.
- You will be expected to attend a pre-programme planning discussion with a member of the course team.
Fees and Funding
The fees below refer to the 2025/26 academic year unless otherwise stated.
Part-time learners: £64 per credit*

Learners who withdraw from the module on or before the start date will likely be charged the full tuition fees.
