Course content

This workshop provides participants with the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in conducting physical health assessments and monitoring in service users with serious mental illness (SMI).


By the end of the session, participants should be able to:

  • Describe epidemiology related to poor physical health in SMI
  • Identify the common physical/medical problems in SMI
  • Examine factors behind poor physical health needs in SMI
  • Describe the process/activities of conducting physical health assessment in SMI
  • Outline the mandatory physical health checks/monitoring conducted in the SMI population (6/12 monthly checks)
  • Develop and understand your role in physical health monitoring

Learning and teaching

Study mode:

Synchronous online delivery via virtual classroom using one of the following web-based learning and teaching platforms (e.g. MS teams, Kaltura new row, Adobe Connect, Zoom). The content on the day will be delivered via a mixture of PowerPoint presentation, small group exercise and discussion, group feedback and recap/quiz.


Fees and funding

There are several funding options available:


  • Receiving course fees via CPPD contracts between NHS trusts and Middlesex University
  • Paying your own fees. This course is £110
  • Sponsorship by your employer.
