Mental Health and Psychological Development of Children and Young People
Course Overview
This 15-credit module aims to enhance the practitioner’s knowledge and understanding of child psychological development theory and the use of evidence-based practice within paediatric mental health care.
Teaching
- Active learning will allow students to learn via collaboration, cooperation, and peer-based learning.
- Activities may include interactive lectures, clinical skills demonstration and supervised practice, small group activities, case-based discussions, workshops, practice simulations, and tutorials.
- Synchronous and asynchronous learning and teaching activities are delivered via a combination of study days and digital strategies at local sites or online using the Virtual Learning Environment.
Assessment
- Formative assessment will take the form of pre-course work, a reflective logbook, and engagement in classroom activities.
- For the summative assessment, learners will be expected to deliver an oral presentation.

- To undertake this module, you must hold a current healthcare-specific professional registration and have at least six months’ experience (post-qualifying) caring for patients with paediatric mental health conditions.

Module Overview
This module is in-line with NHS England’s aims of enhancing both clinical and non-clinical staff member’s mental health skills within a paediatric setting, equipping them with the necessary attributes to challenge their practice and evaluate their care aligned with evidence-based research.

- This module can be taken as standalone Continuing Professional Development (CPD), or as part of a Master’s of Science (MSc), Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip), Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) or Graduate Certificate (GradCert) in Paediatrics & Child Healthcare Practice.
