Program Overview


MRes Business and Management

Overview

The MRes Business and Management programme is designed to equip students with advanced research skills and knowledge in the field of business and management. The programme is tailored to meet the needs of students who wish to pursue a career in research or academia.


Entry Requirements

  • A recognised undergraduate or postgraduate degree (or equivalent qualification) from an accredited college, institution or university, equivalent to or higher than a UK Bachelor honours degree qualification.
  • English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each area (unless otherwise stated) or equivalent accepted qualification.

Course Modules

Year 1

  • Advanced Research Skills for Business: This module will set learners on the path to success by supporting the development of competencies such as the formulation of research ideas, the design of research studies that enable the collection and analysis of valid data whilst operating within the parameters of ethical principles.
  • Business and Management Dissertation: The Dissertation is an independent study module in which students will negotiate, plan, manage and execute a programme of research and analysis.
  • International Finance: This module enables students to understand the international financial system and apply the various international financial strategies available to international corporate managers.
  • Strategic Leadership & Change: This module focuses on both leadership, and management of change. It will be specifically examining the internal and external factors that impact on organisations and will cover creating effective teams across business areas, locations and cultures.
  • Strategic Marketing Management: This module will develop students' understanding of the market decisions that organisations face. Through the application of marketing theory, models and tools students will gain an understanding of the importance of the organisational environment and the impact this has for analysis, planning and control in a strategic marketing management context.
  • Strategic Operations Management: This module explores ways of managing innovation and entrepreneurship and developing and creating new ventures. The module is concerned with the achievement of organisational objectives whilst making efficient use of its resources.
  • Strategic People Management: This module focuses on best practice Strategic People Management in context and will include a critical overview of the key responsibilities, value added contribution and impact of the key People Profession practices including recruitment and selection, performance management, employment law and relations, talent management, organisational development and learning and development.

Funding

  • Self-funded: Students can pay in instalments, and it is possible to switch between full-time and part-time modes of study.
  • Postgraduate Research Loyalty Discount: Available to students progressing from an undergraduate programme and/or a taught postgraduate programme to a postgraduate research programme.
  • Research councils: The UK Research and Innovation funds postgraduate study in all subject areas on a discretionary basis.
  • University Research Studentships: The University offers a very limited number of research stipends, formerly known as bursaries, to research students.
  • Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund: Available to support research students.
